Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Since upgrading to Intrepid Ibex images are not being printed correctly by cups. This happens using either a printer (MFC5840CN) or the cups PDF print driver. See attached PDF.

I've tried reinstalling the printers and purging/reinstalling cups, but the result is the same.

apt-cache policy cups

This is an old problem still unresolved fully. The way it manifests for me is, for example:-

Go to news.bbc.co.uk

File>Print Preview works and shows the images.
File>Print (without changing any settings) prints with black rectangles where the images should be.

That is clearly a bug when preview and print display different results.

However File>Print then choose the Options tab, check the Print Background check box and then print and the images are printed as per the Preview.

I don't know if it is an issue with the way Firefox interprets the page or CUPS. Does anybody know why the above behaviour occurs?

PDFs no longer print. A test page from the printer is fine. I just get an error message now. The attached Troubleshoot.txt was generated by the printer troubleshooter.

Ian Enticott, you problem is probably the one described in bug 294671. Please follow my instructions for a workaround there and report your results.

bwallum, you are hit by a Firefox bug. I have visited the site you mention and then I have chosen to print to a file in the printing dialog (first entry of the printer list). I have tried with both the PostScript and PDF output formats and get black images in both cases. So the data arriving at CUPS when choosing to print to a real printer is already broken.

Please report a new bug for the firefox package.

No - that didn't work. The preview has now disappeared from the pdf
print dialogue box. When I press 'Print' the printer icon appears
briefly on the menu panel and then disappears.

I have the same problem since Intrepid with my brother DCP8065DN printer (and the HP printer at work):
pdf-files are displayed with pictures, but in the evince preview and the printout the pictures are missing.

yens, this is a problem of Evince, as the images are already missing in the preview. This means that evibce already sends the job out without images.

For those who are having the Evince problem of printing images contained in PDF's, the following bug may help you:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cairo/+bug/281713

A fix has been added to the 1.8.2 version of the libcairo package (1.8.0 is the latest available in Intrepid repositories). The bug above has a repository from which it can be downloaded.

It fixed my problem and I hope it does yours also!

Till - as I understand the bug is not with cups but with Firefox or with evince depending on which comment / bug report we are looking at. Is that correct and if so can't this bug be closed?

I went to http://news.bbc.co.uk/ as suggested
did Print->Preview worked fine
did Print (no changes) worked fine all images
printed.

this was on interpid 8.10 with all the latest upgrades
printing to an HP3210 All-in-one, via network connection
to HP3210.

I see not problems with what printed.

I can turn this problem on and off now. I'm running Jainty and using an HP Color Laser 3600n. If I set the printer to medium resolution I get no images printed from news.bbc.co.uk. If I set the printer to high resolution it prints out everything.

To get to the setting you can go System>Administration>Printing then select the printer with a right click and select Properties. Under Printer Options you will see Printer Mode. Try selecting High and see if that helps.

Bug or feature?

My printer has no medium setting but has both "Draft" and "Normal" both
of which print images fine.
