Bug Description

After upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy, reading DVD isn't possible anymore. Writing using K3B (1.0.4/KDE 3.5.9) is OK. Tried new installation: Hardy-Installation-CD (Desktop and Alternate CD) boots into busybox without error-message. Edgy and Gutsy are without any problems.

Tried different BIOS-Settings without success. Maybe this is a similar error to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/213639. There's no difference between kernels 2.26.24-16 and 2.26.24-17.

dmesg after inserting Video-DVD in running Hardy (dmesg-messages after interrupted installation are similar):

Do you have all the DVD packages installed from medibuntu? (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu )

Does this affect all DVDs, or just DVD video? If it affects all DVDs, does it also affect CD-ROMs?

Thanks for your instant reply. Relevant packages I've got installed are

 - libdvdnav4 (0.1.10-0.2)
 - libdvdread3 (0.9.7-8ubuntu1)
 - libdvdcss2 (1.2.9-2medibuntu4)

Should I proof the installation of other packages?

Anyway, the error occurs also while reading the installation-CD's. Booting is possible, but then the error described above occurs. I also tried different media, which are all working in other computers.

Some more information on this:

Trying to mount a CD is sometimes possible via mount -t iso9660 /dev/dvd3 /mnt. Opening /mnt in Nautilus is possible afterwards, it gives a correct directory listing. Anyway, trying to copy the files via drag and drop in Gnome fails with the message:

/mnt/bin/chrome/overlayinfo/browser/content mit fstat(): Input/output error

dmesg gives after these operations:

Hi Felix

Having now read bug 213639, I suspect that that is the same bug that you have. Can you try the steps described to solve it at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/213639/comments/8

If that works, are you happy for this bug to be marked as a duplicate of that one?

Hi Thomas,

after reading your last comment I tried the workaround (amd74xx and via82cxxx modules) a second time. That works now. At my first try it didn't, probably because I used the wrong module-version - sorry for that.

I can also confirm that the 40-wire-cable is the reason in my case. After changing to a 80-wire-cable everything is working fine with the pata_amd-module, too. Connecting the 40-wire-cable I need the amd74xx module.

With the correct cable the installation of hardy is also working fine.

So I agree with you, the bugs are identical.

Thanks a lot for your help!
