Bug Description

I have experienced this with Seagate 250gb External HDD, but similar cases have been found around the internet. Other USB-devices. such as Ipods are working perfectly. Plugging the drive in should give the user 1) Shortcut to desktop 2) Shortcut to Location-tab 3) Nautilus or similar program opened, if they properties have been selected so from System -> Settings -> Drives and Medias-program. Also, these drives dont seem to mount properly as writable, causing programs such as Nautilus crash. On the other hand, mounting them as read only-drives seem to work.

udev detects the disc well.

Hal may be the failing part.

try to kill hald and then to launch it as sudo hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes

then plug your hard drive.

hope something useful may come out of it

Thanks for extra help. Killing Hald and lauching it as hald --daemon=no
--verbose=yes didnt do any good though.

Err, is this the output in the console of the given command ?

this is totally not what I expected ...

in a console, type "sudo killall hald", then, type the command "sudo hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes" then wait for the messages to stop (many should come out). then plug your hard drive, and copy what is printed since then in the console.

OK.

hal detects your device but for an unknown reason does not automount it.

you should have a look at the properties set for your device in the device-manager or in console, which may be easier with the command

hal-device <id_of_the_device>

from your log, hal detected your hard drive under the name "volume_part1_size_250056705024"

which gives the command

hal-device volume_part1_size_250056705024

(of course your device should be connected)

Here's my guess. But I'm not a dev, only a user trying to help :-) so don't took it too seriously.

It seems strange that the type of partition is not recognized : it may be the source of the problem. Moreover, I think I have read somewhere that somebody have solved an automounting problem by formating his device in feisty. It is worth a try...

You could try to create another partition on your drive, using gparted for instance and see what happen.

But I am far from being sure : if it doesn't work, don't cry :-)

Good Luck
