Hi,
I'm not sure to understand. What is your problem ?
The fact that python is in a superior version (i.e 2.5 and 2.7.3) is not a
problem, Python and then Openshot can manage that without any problem.
About MLT, its depends of your version that you have (libmlt4 is not used
since a lot of time, now it is libmlt5). I 'll give you like advice to
update it using this faq : https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/1861
If you have any problems doing this operation, the best thing is to remove
MLT and check with synaptic (for sample) if all is removed. After,
reinstall Openshot (and then mlt).
See links in the faq, you have (normally) some screenshots showing you what
libraries is done mlt.

my bug description was the output of trying to install openshot under xubuntu 12.04. the only way i could resolve it was by upgrading to xubuntu 14.04.

now openshot installs ok, but when in use, it crashes all the time. i will try upgrading MLT as your faq recommends.

openshot+xubuntu11.10 used to work fine. i miss xub11.10; in my view it was a more usable product than xub14.04. oh well...

whilst i'm here, i have an openshot feature request: i would like to be able to take a snapshot occasionally, and "convert to image sequence" is messy because it creates so many photos. i can get around it by exporting, taking a snapshot with vlc, and then adding that to the openshot project, but this is rather timeconsuming. inserting two cuts around the area i want to snapshot and converting to image sequence is also possible, but that too feels like an unsatisfactory hack. if a snaphot feature were to create a .png or .jg file with a filename the same as the openshot projectname appended with the video time that the snapshot was taken, that would be perfect. of course, it could happen that later on, after some more editing, another snapshot was taken with the exact same time, but in that case a "do you want to replace?" box could popup and give the user the chance to change the filename in a "Save As.." dialogue.

hope you like my videos, all of which are produced with openshot.

You can already take a snapshot with Openshot. I don't remember the keymap
but you'll find it in our online manual here :
https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/691

More you'll give us informations more we 'll resolve quickly this situation.
You'll do 3 things.

1- I would like to know exactly versions of the following software
installed : openshot, ffmpeg(libavformat, libavcodecs,..., MLT (libmlt,
libmlt++,...). You have the exact denominations in FAQ's that I have given
you precendtly.
Use a screenshot tool (for sample if you are using synaptics like I've done
on the faq about ffmpeg (link of our forum). Or any way that you like .
2- run openshot in a console (typing openshot or openshot &), do what you
have done until the crash and copy/paste all the output here.
3- Use this faq https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/983 and tell us
(or copy/paste) the result.

i will do that, but before i do, i have a question: which operating system do you and the other openshot developers use?

openshot is my tool of choice. but xubuntu 14.04 seems to be incompatible with it, and going back to xubuntu 11.10 doesn't work either as the repository version of openshot requires a different mlt to the one in xubuntu 11.10. i remember, however, that a few years ago openshot and 11.10 worked fine together.

i would like to switch to the same o/s that you guys use to develop openshot, as it has to be working better for you than it is for me. can you tell me what you use please?

the problem seems to be all about libs. new editions of them are often incompatible with apps that used their prior versions, and only a developer would know how to do a selective update that keeps things consistent. apt -get update does all kinds of things i didnt ask it to do - and many i wish it hadn't! for example, i have read somewhere that some things require ffmpeg but 14.04 refuses to allow it in, because it has been superceded by a newer shinier toy, but unfortunately for me one that doesnt work with video download helper which i use to get raw materials for my own creations.

maybe it's time i got a mac....

like martin luther king, i have a dream. that one day, linux will find a way to provide a gui, so that users and developers can walk hand in hand as brothers up the mountain of usability to the promised land.

Well a big question but why not, afterall it is not a secret.
Jonathan is using Linux Mint, Ubuntu.
Andy is using Linux Mint mate edition and AV4Linux (debian multimedia derivated with lxde)
Olivier (i.e me) is using Manjaro (Archlinux derivated) and Linux Mint Cinnamon edition occasionnelly.

>>>please tell me how to find that out. i presume there is some bash command that does it but i am not familiar with all the shell commands... not familiar with any of them in fact! i'm a user, not a developer.

I was thinking that was in the link of our forum of one of our faq (1040). Let me remember how they are. Anyway, you could use a graphical tool like synaptic searching word like melt, libmlt, libavformat, libavcodec,...Search one of them and you'll find others and either copy/paste their name/number either take a screenshot with a tool like shutter.

About the warning of lapdsa-plugins missing, it does'nt matter because this version don't use yet those. But you can resolve them with this command :
sudo apt-get install swh-plugins

>>>like martin luther king, i have a dream. that one day, linux will find a way to provide a gui, so that users and developers can walk hand in hand as brothers up the mountain of usability to the promised land.

Very nice picture. I like. I must precise that I'm not a developer intially but Just an user who like this system and this software that I've done one mine one day. I think that everybody can help a open source project in any direction translating, reporting bugs, new request, helping in their developement plateform, helping some users, developing, creating some titles 2d or/and 3D, transitions, effects,......
