Bug Description
Netflix Desktop is unable to display video at all on some systems. Some users have reported that clearing the profile directory fixes the problem:
rm -Rf ~/.netflix-desktop

William Seddon (wseddon) wrote : | #2 |
I tried this on Lubuntu 12.04. When I open the Netflix Desktop, I get to the Netflix start screen, I'm logged on to Netflix, but when I select a video, the screen goes black, except for the cursor. No picture , no sound.
System is a Dell Inspiron 700M
Pentium M 1.6Gz processor
2 Gb RAM
ron eames (persccal) wrote : | #3 |
I also get the same results as wseddon, however, when invoked from a terminal, I get a glibc detected error. I'm guessing there is an overflow in the stack? The dump generated follows:
*** glibc detected *** C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\

Prior to that crash do you see an error finding libgl like in this bug?:

You probably need to launch Netflix Desktop like so:

Jaime, mesa-utils shouldn't really fix this kind of thing - do you know which dependencies it pulled in? I'll need to add whatever the appropriate dependency is onto the package so that this doesn't happen to people anymore.

Kheops_74, could you please attach a log from running?:

The "showdebug" option doesn't currently enable that extra information, which appears to be relevant to this issue.
Kheops_74 (sang) wrote : | #14 |
Ok i will do it. An other piece of information. I use the Firefox icon on the desktop. It open the wine firefox version. I went to the netflix site. I loged in and start the same video. This time i saw the progress bar and a new message appear in the screen:
Whoops, something went wrong...
Internet Connection Problem
An Internet or home network connection problem is preventing playback. Please check your Internet Connection and try again.
Error Code : N8156-6205
My internet connection is ok. Maybe it's just a security parameter in Firefox.
Kheops_74 (sang) wrote : | #15 |
Erich E. Hoover (ehoover) wrote : | #16 |
Unfortunately, the icon on the desktop won't use the correct Wine. In order to reduce confusion, new installs of Netflix Desktop (0.3.0) shouldn't create this icon (so you can safely delete it).
That's odd, there doesn't appear to be libgl diagnostics in that log... What graphics card, driver, and driver version are you using?
Kheops_74 (sang) wrote : | #17 |
Card : Geforce GTX 55- TI

I think i will delete the profile folder an reinstall everything again.

I reinstall. Here a new log. Seem to have more information.
Erich E. Hoover (ehoover) wrote : | #19 |
Interesting, it appears that the nvidia driver doesn't report any additional information with that flag (checked on my PC as well). Anyway, you may try updating to the 310 driver, that's what I'm using (with a GeForce GTX 560M).
Kheops_74 (sang) wrote : | #20 |
i tried with 310. Still only audio. I tried an other box (older) and it works fine.
What desktop are you using? On the box that work, it's Unity and on my box that didn't it's Gnome 3.6. I saw using alt-tab on the box who work that the icon is "set video mode to direct 3d" and look like the VLC icon. It's not the case on my Gnome box. Maybe i have a 3d problem on it. I really don't know where to begin the search.
Thanks
Kheops_74 (sang) wrote : | #21 |
It works. I had a problem with Unity desktop and it's why i used Gnome. I think this was the solution to my Unity problem:
complete thread:
http://
Then I find this in
Code:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
How on earth did that get there? I changed to "Enable" and everything is fine now.
Since Unity works, netflix-desktop works on utity and on gnome. Great news.

Well, although bug #1089976 seems to be solved, albeit haphazardly, I must now join in on this one. It worked flawlessly on a freshly-installed simplymepis system until I upgraded the rest of the system packages. Or, it could be that I stupidly decided out of curiosity to check what version of Firefox netflix-desktop was running, forgetting that Firefox delights in starting an upgrade from that window the moment you open it. So, I had upgraded on accident to 17.0.1. As I said, however, both the os upgrade and the netflix-desktop browser upgrade happened at roughly the same time.
I've deleted ~/.netflix-desktop; I've uninstalled it as well as wine-compholio, and tried purging and reinstalling both. But unfortunately I'm at a black screen. Audio is still perfect, just no video unfortunately.
Oh! I almost forgot. I had to disable the fullscreen addon now as well. Before the upgrades it worked perfectly as well (nifty addon I must say!) but this evening when I clicked on a title to watch in netflix, it would freeze momentarily, then completely crashed the KDE/xserver. I was able to repeat this multiple times, but discovered if I disabled that addon it then proceeded to the black screen. I don't know if that gives you any clues but I thought I should mention it.
Running SimplyMepis 11.0/64-bit (debian squeeze variant) HP DC7700, Intel integrated 82Q35 graphics controller. I'm attaching the LIBGL_DEBUG output.
Thanks for attacking this like you have.. you're a hero at my house!

@Andy, this looks like your OpenGL driver is not properly installed. Are you using an ATI, nVidia, or Intel card, which driver (proprietary/OSS), and what driver version?
Kheops_74 (sang) wrote : | #26 |
I think Erich is right the problem must be related to the OpenGL or a 3d config of your Linux Box. I did a lot of tests to find what was wrong with my installation of netflix-desktop.
Since i solve my 3d problem with compiz and openGL everything work soooo well. Great tool!
Thanks Erich.

Erich E. Hoover (ehoover) wrote : | #32 |
@Andrew, I'm sorry you had trouble and gave up - I have not seen or heard any other issue like that. To my knowledge Netflix still allows all users to use Silverlight 4.
@Israel, I'm tracking the plugin crash issue over in this bug: https:/
@werner, that's great news! I've been looking into ways to detect that compositing is enabled without directly reading the config file. Once I find a good way to do this then I'll build a check into the launcher script to inform users that they must enable compositing to use the app.
Lukas Rieder (lrieder) wrote : | #33 |
Erich, I seem to have the same problem, and I definitely do have compositing enabled. I've even enabled some of the eye candy just to make sure.
Like the others, I only get sound whenever playing a video on Netflix. Other Silverlight videos (e.g. the smoothstreaming test) work fine. I should mention that my screen (at least the wine portion of it) does not go black, instead I get randomly colored pixels (static) or some other kind of artifacts. This happens regardless of whether the browser is in fullscreen or not. I have only installed netflix-desktop today, so it's the latest version. I've reinstalled my graphics driver (fglrx) and purged the .netflix-desktop directory several times. So far, all to no avail.
This is the output I get from LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose netflix-desktop --showdebug:

I hope you aren't closing this as fixed simply because you committed a check for compositing. I have this exact issue, black screen with only audio playing and all, on a system that I know for certain has compositing that works just fine. Further more, if I unfullscreen the netflix-desktop app and then drag or resize the Window, often the video will suddenly reappear.
My point is, even if you've added a check for compositing this is far from "Fix Committed"

Hi Dylan, I do plan on closing this particular bug (and changing the title to indicate the compositing issue) with the next release. I am perfectly happy to wrap the remaining issues into a new bug, but for my work-flow it is better for me to close a partially solved issue and start over with a new bug on the remaining issue(s). If I don't do that then I will spend a lot of time trying to figure out whether reported information is related to the already solved issue or if it's related to the remaining problem(s). If you would like to create a new bug now then that would be great,

I have this bug as well, but removing the config file doesn't work. I still get the blank screen with the audio playing. Silverlight seems to work everywhere else I've tested it, just not on Netflix. I'm running the legacy nvidia 173 driver.
