Incorrect translation in South-American Spanish for Video folder

Reporting there's a mistake on "Videos" folder name for Spanish
translations.

Current text: "Vídeos"
Proper text: "Videos" -- Without acute accent

I believe its due to not using the Rosetta translations wich I hope can
be fixed for jaunty-updates too.

Löic, that translation is correct. Here's what I've found:

In Spain the word "Vídeos" is the way to go. That's the one used by google.

In American countries that speak Spanish, "Videos" means the same as "Vídeos" and is spoken different too. The RAE dictionary, the one that is in charge to organize the Spanish language, says: http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltConsulta?TIPO_BUS=3&LEMA=video (IN SPANISH)

Can't tell how to follow on this case but my locale settings are Spanish - Spanish (Colombia) from the clean installation I made of UNR. I suppose it should use an American locale of Spanish not the Spain one. I know Mozilla does translations for Spain and for Argentina, for Americans the latter one would fit better. "Vídeos" sounds weird.

Actually there is not South-America Spanish, neither in Gnome Translations (http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/es) or Ubuntu (https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/xdg-user-dirs/+pots/xdg-user-dirs). There is just Spanish.

Spanish language try to be the more common, correct and plain as possible and the word «vídeo» wear acute accent as the RAE says.

Also the most of translations on free software projects use «vídeo»:

I know it could be a bit weird for some one from Colombia or others countries, but that is correct and any Spanish speaker can undertand it.

Anyway, probably some official Ubuntu translator from the Spanish team (~ubuntu-l10-es) answer officially this bug.

Nothing more to say aside Juanjo's comment. The right word in Spanish is «vídeo».

With all due respect, the word «vídeo» is a correct translation if you were translating for Spain only, and that's not the case for Ubuntu Spanish Translators. I've always thought that that translation is partial.

Also, have in mind that RAE is becoming panhispanic, but it is not panhispanic yet. You can find entries there that include meanings taken from Spain only.

I understand your pint of view, but as long as I know, In GNOME, the Spanish translations groups join toguether to have a single, but more complete, Spanish translation rather a lot of different and less complete translations. That is because the number of translators we have and the personal and voluntary time the can use for the project.

So, they have to have an agreement about which words are more correct for the most of the people. Some times it doesn't like to prople from Spain, like «computadora» (see the GNOME entries here -> http://en.es.open-tran.eu/suggest/computer ), and others to prople from other countries, like this case.

In another hand, in the RAE dictionary you can find words and meaning from other countries. You can checks words like «papa», «guagua», «carro» (in the South American meaning of «car»), «alebrestarse», «bemba» and much more.

I know GNOME and Ubuntu Spanish Translators are translating as neutrally as possible so that those translations can be used in all Spanish speaking countries. And that is the reason why I don't understand the use of "vídeo" instead of "video".

I haven't found any discussions in the lists of these teams that suggest that there is an agreement to use "vídeo" as the recommended translation for the English "video".

I'm not saying that RAE has no meanings used in other Spanish speaking countries, I'm saying the dictionary is in the process to include them, so there are many entries that don't do that yet. For this reason I think we should not judge the correctness of a translation based only in what RAE says.

I'm sorry to be a pain in the neck but I don't understand. It's more the quantity of Spanish speaking countries that use "video" instead of "vídeo".

Fix released.
We are translating for all the people who speak Spanish, not only for spanish people. So, in many places, we say video. Only in Spain say video, or fichero.

Please, don't change a translation already done before discussing it in the ubuntu-es-l10n and/or the GNOME mailing list. We should use the same criteria used by the GNOME upstream translators, and they use «vídeo» over «video»:
