Bug Description

There is a page that displays a list of all visible mailing lists only : https://domain.tld/mailman/listinfo

It would be useful to have a page, accessible by an administrator, that would display all lists, even non-visible ones. This page could be used as frontpage (ie shown when accessing https://domain.tld/mailman), with links to config pages for all lists.

Currently, to access a list, one needs to type the whole https://domain.tld/mailman/listinfo/lisname URL. Which assumes that the admin knows how to write any of his lists, and even remembers all his lists.

The summary page could list all lists with a recap of major parameters (Yes, that kind of choice is never easy. That could be : number of subscribers, moderation or not, etc...)

Clearly only the site admin should be able to see this page. List admins should not be able to see information about hidden lists that don't belong to them.

The site admin already has access to all this information via command line tools, thus co-opting the http(s)://domain.tld/mailman/ url for a page of such limited usefulness doesn't seem worthwhile.

Are you aware that there is currently an admin overview with links to all the non-hidden lists' admin pages at http(s)://domain.tld/mailman/admin. If a list admin wants her/his lists on a public page, she/he can just not hide them and they will be there.

Sure.

CL is not as practical as web interface. Well, it is for some people. It cas
even be faster. But it does not replace a web interface (access to CL from any
distant machine, need to know the commands, etc.).

There is a web interface to create a list, but not one to display them all
(including hidden ones).

This is as fine as http(s)://domain.tld/mailman/

But then why hide the lists to the admin ? Why not display them all ? (Or
optionally display them all ?)

On my opinion and experience, hiding is useful to hide lists to the public.
But I don't see the point of hiding those lists on a site admin page.

The list admin overview is a public page and has to be because the
admin cannot authenticate until she/he goes to the page for her/his
specific list. Thus, hidden lists cannot be shown (at least initially)
on this page.

One way to implement what you are asking would be to add an input field
and a submit button to the existing overview page along the lines of
"To see all lists on this server including those that might be hidden
or in other domains, enter the Mailman site admin password and click
'authenticate'".

Another way would be to have a specific (different) URL for the site
admin overview and have an authentication page for it.

Either way, we run into the issue of whether the site allows site admin
cookies because without that, we can't even set a cookie when the site
admin authenticates without a list context which means the admin would
have to re-authenticate to visit a list's admin page.

Given that this is all changing in Mailman 3 anyway, I don't think it's
worth the effort to implement something which I see is of very limited
usefulness.

This makes sense.

Then let's consider this "bug report" as a suggestion for mailman 3.

Thanks for answering.
