Bug Description

After trying to resume from hibernation or sleep mode, my screen stays black and does not respond to mouse or keyboard. I have seen online people try to use ctrl+alt+del and press enter to reboot, but my keyboard doesn't seem to respond to any keys.

Thank you for reporting a bug in Linux Mint. Unfortunately I do not have the necessary hardware to reproduce your problem. If anyone else can confirm this bug, please say so. Please check out the Linux Mint Forums, where there are many more people available to help out with diagnosing any problems you have. Please repost this in the forums, and put a link to it here, so I can track any further development. It is also exceptionally useful if you include the output of "inxi -F" when reporting hardware problems. You might also like to check out this article: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html This is a standard response, so it may not be entirely appropriate.

I will do anything I can to solve this, if there is indeed a bug in the kernel. Please note I have recently had partition problems (On windows 7 of course) and formatted my drive and only installed Linux Mint on the drive. I will let you know if there is still a persistent problem with this. Here are my results for command "inxi -F":

I just did a fresh install, and this bug still affects me. I have upgraded to the most recent version of Nvidia hardware driver (version 180) and in the package manager I have marked all upgrades and applied.

In both Suspend and Hibernate, the keyboard seems to be non responsive (Num Lock light does not come on)

I can confirm the continued existence of the bug on an Mint Helena Xfce final (32-bit) wit the latest updates as of mid-April.

I was however forced to install a newer linux to solve the problem (ubuntu lucid lynx, which seems to have no problem on the same hardware - I assume an updated kernel will solve the problem?), so I cannot immediately be of further assistance in huntign it down.

I also have this problem while running Mint 11 Katya 32bit. When I set the computer to sleep, I just see a black screen when I try to awaken it. I'm not sure if it's also related to the system's tendency to hang after ~20 minutes or so (I would only have firefox up with maybe two tabs open). And by hang, I mean the screen will freeze but the mouse cursor will still move. I am unable to click on anything, but if the computer was left on pandora it will continue playing music while hanging. The time and website will not update visually though.

If the laptop went into hibernation because of being left alone for too long, it didn't come back up.

If the laptop screen was closed, re-opening the screen would bring up the login screen successfully.

This issue persists in Linux Mint 14.1 Cinnamon. It seems the problem occurs only after loong suspends, just like AdanOva (gatocaradepez) reported above at the beginning of this page. I haven't measured specific times but if I suspend for like 15 min everything is fine.

The issue occurs when I try to resume my PC in the morning after it was resumed from the previous day (suspended throughout the night). After night-long suspends the active parts of the machine seem to awaken normally (I can hear fans...not sure about HDDs) but the monitor, mouse, and keyboard are dead (no light in the mouse, keyboard lights don't work - caps lock etc, monitor reports "no signal"). When I said "not sure about HDDs" I meant "I am not sure whether they get power-on or not". They certainly aren't used. Seems like total system freeze.

I use proprietary amd graphics driver, specifically, the the last, 3rd, option (fglrx-updates) on the Additional Drivers page of Software Sources. I also have the "flickering screen" issue (flickering instead of smooth transition to blackness) while the system goes to screensaver mode (the black screen with text in corners). Not sure if it's related, but just in case. :)

Addentum: I tried fixes/workarounds posted in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1978290

The first (long version) of the script doesn't work at all. The system freezes everytime as per the bug description. Adding other *_hcd drivers like uhci and ohci doesn't solve the problem.

The last (the short version) of the script always resumes into the "Checking battery state........[ok]" message on the screen and that's it. Switching to tty1 works and I can login that way; sadly only into the terminal. I haven't tried to resurrect the gui from there because I don't know how.

I also tried combining the script with various GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX parameters such as GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_sleep=s3_mode"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_sleep=nonvs"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable"
as listed here https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt (search for acpi_sleep). Adding any of those parameters didn't change anything so I changed them back to default (i.e. "") and deleted 20_custom-ehci_hcd script fix attempt.

Since my last comment (25/12/2012) this issue hasn't occurred yet. I enabled "Repost Video on S3 Resume" on my ASUS P5B Deluxe motherboard and it works (the feature is under Power menu). I enabled that feature after removing all fix-attempts.

I'm using Linux Mint 13 Maya 64 bit MATE edition based on Unbuntu 12.04 LTS. I can suspend several times (the number varies) before the computer freezes. Length of time suspended does not seem to be a factor. (One minute suspends and overnight suspends have both worked.) Once frozen, I see a black screen with some error messages (see below) Once frozen, no input from me has any effect on the computer except holding the power button down for several seconds to turn off the computer. I assume this is a software problem as Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64 bit ran on this computer for a year or two without any problems.

Text seen on screen while computer frozen. (Copied by hand.) The first 4 lines are repeated several times with different time stamps. The final 6 lines vary, having two lines that mention"serial" and two lines with error code -5:

The funny thing is - I am now in Mint Mate (Rosa) and neither Suspend nor hibernate do work correctly. Although it worked before perfectly in Kubuntu 12.04 (no hardware change)

Suspend = The pc goes to sleep - tries to wake up (can hear the fan running) but does not respond to keyboard / mouse and the screen stays black.

Hibernate = The PC tries to do that for one sec and then is back to "normal".

I hope this gets fixed one day cuz the rest of mint is just great. Thanks to all people involved.

Just updated to kernel: 3.19.0-56-generic in Mint Mate 17.3 (ROSA) and now hibernate seems to work almost 100%.

If my pc wakes up there is the UUID written on the screen. The pc seems to hang. But with

STRG + ALT + s-abf (german)

/

CTRL + ALT + SysRq (english)

THEN pressing first

r

then

e

it boots back up completely to desktop! Hooray!

I also have problems with Hibernate. I have a Lenovo laptop E50-80, brand new, with a fresh Linux Mint 17.3 (Rosa) install and the default kernel version (3.19.0-32-generic), 64-bit platform.

When I explicitly tells the computer to hibernate, or when it does automatically because of very low battery, the computer seems to try to hibernate (I see the lock screen appear twice) but instead shuts down. Then when I boot again, the screen stays black after I select the entry in Grub. I have to force the shutdown, and then it boots fine.

Please let me know if this sounds like a different bug that I should open, and let me know if there is any additional info I can provide.

I can confirm the difficulties with Hibernate:
Kernel: 3.16.0-38-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Cinnamon 2.8.8
Distro: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa
Machine: Mobo: Acer model: Aspire VN7-591G v: V1.08 Bios: Insyde v: V1.08 date: 09/12/2014

The hibernation process itself does not show any indications of problems, however, if the
system is resumed, the screen remains black (any ALT+CTRL+Fn does not work), and I can only
completely switch off the system and fresh reboot.

Occasionally, the system comes back and works for a few seconds or even minutes, before it
freezes. No mouse movement, no switching to a terminal, nothing will work.

If the system resumes after hibernate, the menu to hibernate is gone.
If I call hibernate from the command-line in this case, the whole system freezes; no terminal
switching will be possible, mouse stopped.

This would be somewhat alleviated if I could keep the system in suspend-state at critical battery
level. Right now, the problems cause me more data-loss then it should, because suspend is not working with a critical battery status.

On my Acer Aspire E1-531 I installed Linux Mint 18 with latest updates.
I'm having same problems.
When I come back from sleep or hibernate desktop stops responding and every name on desktop disappears, even date, time, names of icon everthing disappears, only icons I can see, even I cannot click them. Worse than that, when I restart cinnamon, laptop hangs! I just have to remove battery to restart it. This problem also occurs when I keep some screensaver, and when I put my laptop idle, without using it for sometime, and when I click on screen saver to get back on log in screen it hangs, and I cannot get back to my log in screen.
Please fix it.
Thanks.

I have the same bug. I have Mint 18.1 installed both on laptop and desktop. It resumes just fine on laptop (Asus UX305) but on the fairly mainstream desktop it works 50/50. Sometimes screen just remains in sleep mode after resume and the keys and mouse are just not responding.

I have the same problem and have had it since Mint 17 (the original Mint I installed). I am now running Mint 18 Cinnamon 32-bit 3.0.7 and kernel 4.4.0-57-generic on a stock standard HP Compaq 6200 SFF Desktop PC. I keep it up to date with the Update Manager.
I only notice the problem if the PC has been left on for more than a day without any user interaction. It happens every weekend. I come in to work Monday morning and there is no response whatsoever on the keyboard or mouse. Caps-lock and Num-lock keys have no effect, the LEDs do not change state. It's as though the keyboard and mouse were not connected (both are wired USB devices).
The PC has only 1 function: to backup our windows file server once a day using a bash script executed using crontab. This script runs fine during the week, as long as I wake up the Pc every day. If I miss a day, the script won't run, suggesting the PC is well and truly asleep.

Further to my post #33 above: My Power Options are set to turn off screen after 10 mins and to NEVER suspend when inactive (so why is it suspending in the 1st place?)
