Music fonts from Sibelius or Finale are non-unicode symbol fonts.

This bug is actually a duplicate of Bug #165665 https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/165665 and is a known problem in Inkscape:

On Windows, symbol fonts without a Unicode map do not work. This is a limitation of the Pango library that we use.

I have found a workaround for this bug: One has to change the character encoding from the music/symbol fonts to an encoding that is recognized by Pango (i guess) such as the default Latin 2 encoding. This can be done with a font editor such as FontLab (tested) or FontFroge (not tested). After reinstalling the changed font, Inkscape will recognize it. I'm not sure though if changing the encoding has any negative side effects for other software (also not sure about any copyright issues you might be violating by changing the fonts...). At least Sibelius and Word can still handle the fonts correctly.
