Bug Description

I have explained the problem in detail in the following link (inkscapeforum.com), with attachments and screenshots. :

http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1120

Basically, v.046 is not listing several musical truetype fonts i have correctly installed in my system, and when importing pdfs that refer to them, it display incorrectly.

Im pasting the text report here:
I have a problem. Im printing from a musical score program to pdf. I want to open that PDF in Inkscape (0.46, last version), but even the preview of the document is fine in the import dialog, when Inkscape open it, the font is not showed properly. The font is called "SToccata" and is in the windows\fonts folder properly installed, but Inkscape dont show it in the fonts menu. I tried the workaround of the faq for issues with fonts (even it says that .46 solved the problem). Beyond that, the font is embedded in the pdf.
Below are some pics to ilustrate what i say, and the PDF itself http://stashbox.org/136375/Dia-de-la-bandera-Interludio-Violin-Piano-02.pdf
I tryed with other musical fonts installed in my system, and same issue.

Here is the preview Inkscape shows me when i will import the PDF, all is fine with that preview:

But when i press ok, i get this mumble-rumble:

Here is how is it supposed to be displayed:

I am having the same problem with music fonts I use. The fonts are part of the Sibelius package and come with their scorch browser plugin. If you want to play you can get a copy from here :-

http://www.sibelius.com/scorch/

If you install the plugin it will also install the necessary fonts.

I see exactly the same problem described above. PDFs created using these fonts show odd characters when loaded into Inkscape and some of the music fonts (Opus & Inkpen) do not show up in the Inkscape font menu. If you want an example of a PDF that doesn't work there is one here :-

Whilst there are probably similar errors in the fonts to those mentioned in the original post, it would be nice if Inkscape was a bit more friendly about handling those errors. I haven't noticed any problems with other software using these fonts.

setting to status to 'Confirmed' based on comment #1 and similar issue described in bug report #395695 “incomplete pdf import” <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/395695>

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Confirmed

Same with MAESTRO_.TTF, the default font for Finale music notation software. When creating new text in Inkscape, the font isn't even listed.

so I'm not sure it is related to PDF import. It is simply a font support problem with text in Inkscape (tested using Inkscape 0.48)

Music fonts from Sibelius or Finale are non-unicode symbol fonts.

This bug is actually a duplicate of Bug #165665 https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/165665 and is a known problem in Inkscape:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ReleaseNotes045#Non-Unicode_symbol_fonts_on_Windows_don.27t_work.
<quote>
Non-Unicode symbol fonts on Windows don't work
On Windows, symbol fonts without a Unicode map do not work. This is a limitation of the Pango library that we use.
</quote>

I have found a workaround for this bug: One has to change the character encoding from the music/symbol fonts to an encoding that is recognized by Pango (i guess) such as the default Latin 2 encoding. This can be done with a font editor such as FontLab (tested) or FontFroge (not tested). After reinstalling the changed font, Inkscape will recognize it. I'm not sure though if changing the encoding has any negative side effects for other software (also not sure about any copyright issues you might be violating by changing the fonts...). At least Sibelius and Word can still handle the fonts correctly.

That workaround did it! Blessed be those who have a font editor and can create TTF files ....

I still hope that Inkscape will at some point support symbol fonts as well!
Is there a list of all encodings supported by Pango?
