Bug Description
When using 12.04, X will crash and send me to the login screen. This can happen when working, or when the computer is idle.
I'm using version 295.33. I remember getting the same crash occuring on 11.10 when I upgraded to version 295.20 [version before 295.33], but this may or may not be the same bug.
Here are a few lines from the end of dmesg:

Not sure exactly why this bug report is being ignored. It's very critical that this gets fixed. I can't downgrade to 290.10 drivers, so if I have to stick to 11.10, I will.

I have a similar issue with nvidia drivers where X does not start at all and Ubuntu goes into login screen. Downgrading to 295.20 does nothing.
Is something wrong with the latest kernel, because the only way to boot is by using the older kernel (3.0.0+ in my case), not with the latest.
Hope it helps.

I have the same issue where by I am thrown to the login screen (The first time caused a complete freeze of the system). I've not seen the issue on my other desktops which also run nvidia cards of various versions. This is a real pain for me as this is my main work desktop!
The card that this fails on is:

This issue should be assigned to someone by now and he/she should be working round the clock to fix this, there are litterally millions of pc's using nVidia hardware which all potentially have this bug.
People are loosing work because of this and it really pisses them off!
I've lost hours of work aswell, which results in litterally throwhing money down the drain.
Make this top priority it's been open for a month now!
Victor (victor-pillac) wrote : | #17 |
@nosaer82 I could not agree more with you, it make the distribution useless!
I personally updated to 302.07, but it stills happends (but less frequently, or maybe I just stopped using flash/video)
There may be a solution here:
http://
The suggested solution is to add the following ppa:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-
sudo apt-get update
Then force the version 295.40 in synaptic.
Julien (julienmbpe) wrote : | #18 |
@nosaer82 : an other solution is to (temporarily?) use the opensource driver, I don't have had any crash since I've done.

Hey guys,
I was having this issue too using Ubuntu 12.04 and the 295.40 NVidia drivers.
I added
Option "UseEvents" "False"
In the "Device" section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file .
It seems i'm not having any more crashes.. at least for now..
Cheers

I have had success running ubuntu 2D to avoid this. However I finally got annoyed enough with other bugs in 2D that I switched to KDE, which runs like a champ (although the default fonts need to be replaced first thing after install.) So I suspect Unity/Compiz is doing something the nvidia driver does not expect, given that both 2D and KDE are stable with the same driver.
macramole (leandrogarber) wrote : | #22 |
Yes Morris, you are right, the crashes seem to have reduced but I get one from time to time... I'm trying ubuntu 2d now using compiz as window manager (http://
MvW (2nv2u) wrote : | #23 |
@julienmbpe
I'm using multiple monitors on a Quadro FX based laptop with a docking station, which does not work with nouveau.
It was running perfectly fine before 12.04.
This bugs basically makes my laptop, which is my daily workstation, useless and I'm piratically forced to reinstall my machine with a previous version of Ubuntu.
It isn't reliable enough to work with it and I can't afford loosing work again.
I've also tried using 295.40 and 302.07, both contain the same bug (assuming it's the nvidia driver).
Still baffled that this bug isn't being addressed yet. There are 14 duplicate bug reports and almost 200 people are mentioning being affected by this bug and still nobody from Canonical, as far I can tell, is looking into this.
Besides the trouble it's causing me, regular desktop people are ditching Ubuntu (and Linux) and give this potential great desktop a bad reputation which it cannot afford.
You can't expect people who just want a working machine to hack into there system just because they upgraded to the newest version. Even if they tried to be save by using a LTS version for the sake of stability.
The fact that the bug exists within a LTS release is questionable, but the fact it's not being addressed after a Month (Even before the actual release), even for a free OS, is regrettable.
This really should be top priority not for my sake but the general acceptance of Linux as a great Windows and OS/X alternative.
Canonical has taken this burden upon them and shouldn't let it slip.

I installed the 290.10 using the x86_64 package downloaded off the NVIDIA
website. I had no crash ever since.
I stressed my system by playing multiple YouTube and Vimeo Flash HD clips
in parallel (that used to crash everytime), no problem!
If you don't need the latest changes in the drivers, this is a very viable
solution!

As per David Edwards (purple52), 290.10 stops the xorg crash. I've been stable for over day now. Chrome seem to increase the crash frequency, but it's all good now.
Nice start to my migration from 7 to Ubuntu. Can finally get on with it now.

Still crashing regularly with the 295.53, if 290.10 does not have this bug the default software source (nvidia-current) should get rid of 295.40 and replace it with that version for now.
Again, this is a major show stopper for potentially every nVidia user!
Even though it's assigned to someone for a week now, still nothing has happened, I'm stumped and flabbergasted this continues to be a problem.

Not just Nvidia driver, also open sourced driver has problem. It happened once with my ATI too. What can i say more - 12.04 is the most buggy release. Even with Unity 2D i had some problems but after all Unity 2D is useless for long work. Canonical can't complain about people switching back to Windows or anothe distro. Don't take me wrong - Ubuntu is fantastic and loved Unity but this bugs with crashing Xorg are so important. I am sorry about the issues you are having, but please, let's be consistent on what issue we are talking about in this particular thread. There are multiple possible reasons for X to crash, and it strikes me that you clearly refer to another issue than the one described here. I was having this issue (reported one of the duplicates), my X crashed approximately every 20 minutes. After having switched to nouveau (the open source driver), my box ran fine for two weeks without a single crash. This particular issue seems to be related to my specific video card, I have colleagues running the nvidia-current on other cards just fine.

MvW (2nv2u) wrote : | #52 |
@jfleach
No, this is not the same issue, the X-server crash results in a lost session setting you back to the login screen.
The 30x.xx driver series has nothing to do with this bug, it's not even in the repository.
@pelleke
I do have more machines running different kinds of nVidia hardware, I did not encounter this issue with any other of them, but then again I haven't used them for more than maximum 1 hour at a time either, so can't confirm there not affected.
I'm using a Quadro FX 3800M on the affected machine (G92 Core) and it's my daily workstation, I have another machine equipped with a 8800GTS 512 which has the same core, but still hasn't crashed, but again it isn't used a lot.

Anyone have a different NVidia GPU that is affected?
Roger Binns (ubuntu-rogerbinns) wrote : | #56 |
I'm another user affected by this with an 8800GT that has been rock solid stable in prior Ubuntu releases. I'm running the gnome shell fallback mode. The current, current-updates and x-swat repository versions all resulted in random crashes back to the login screen.
I've tried using the noveau driver instead but it increasingly loses its marbles over time. After about 8 hours of uptime it starts flickering random bits of random windows in random places on the screen, and gets progressively worse. It also hangs the X server inputs for a few seconds while doing this.
Consequently neither binary nor noveau driver provide a usable desktop.

NVIDIA Corporation G80 [GeForce 8800 GTX] (rev a2)
I was having problems with the 290.40 driver so i added x-swat ppa. I'm now on 295.53. With the 290.40 driver i couldn't log into either Unity or Gnome shell. 295.53 solved that problem but i'm having random xorg crashes that bring me to the log in screen. I have lost some work because of this.
I have tried the open source driver but i have problems setting up my dual monitor set up with them so i am hoping that this problem gets fixed soon. Is this an issue with the drivers or is it a Ubuntu problem? Also, is anything currently happening with the problem?

I came back to free driver because of this bug whith proprietary drivers and stay like that for a few days whithout any bug and when Alberto Milone asked for the kern.log after a crash, I switch to proprietary driver (current version) and I've no bug since I do that.
So I don't understand why but it worked...

Further info, was using Ubuntu 12.04 with Nvidia Geforce 9500GT with nvidia-current absolutely no problems, upgraded to 9800GT and began seemingly random crashes of xorg resulting in logout.
Yesterday installed Opensuse 12.1 and all fine with default install of Nouveau driver, installing nvidia-current on Opensuse results in same random logouts, and swapping 9800gt back to 9500gt problem disappears.
Both cars work flawlessly under Windows XP and Windows 7, so can assure the GFX cards are ok.

X crashes always starting the following programs: varicad, qcad, musescore, rosegarden... issuing segfault on Xorg log.
Last version 302.11/1.12 makes nvclock segfault.

I'm having the same problem on a Quadro FX3700 card running 295.40. It seems this applies to specific cards, I have an ATI/AMD card and an Intel card at home, which don't have this issue and run very stable.
I'm looking at moving 30+ machines to Ubuntu 12.04 (15 of which have the Quadro FX3700 card). Hopefully this will be fixed soon, as currently it's a complete show stopper, as we can't have people being logged out 5-10 times at random during every work day.

@Daniel Dadap: any ideas?
Daniel Dadap (ddadap) wrote : | #107 |
Hi Alberto,
There seem to be a lot of reports here, and it's hard to tell whether they're all related. We are currently investigating reports of a regression with very recent versions of Flash where the X server can crash when playing videos, which it sounds like many of the users here are reporting, but there are many other reports here which sound completely unrelated to Flash, including the post from the original reporter.
The root cause of the Flash regression is not yet known, but in the meantime, we have found that it's possible to work around this particular issue by disabling Flash's use of VDPAU for hardware acceleration of video playback.
It sounds like a lot of people here are experiencing general stability problems with Unity and the NVIDIA driver, and using other desktop sessions, older drivers, or different GPU hardware/drivers avoids these issues. I haven't personally seen issues like this on any of my machines running Unity on Precise, nor am I aware of any reports like this coming from our internal testing on various distributions, including Ubuntu.
I understand that the reports are of crashes which are random and sporadic in nature, but any efforts to isolate specific workflows or actions that seem to trigger the crashes or at least make it more likely that X or the desktop session will crash so that these problems can be reproduced on demand will make it much easier to investigate what is happening. If there appear to be multiple problems that share similar symptoms ("Nvidia driver causes xorg crash" can describe a multitude of issues), they should preferably be separated out into distinct bug reports. (It also seems like at least some people on this bug report are reporting issues with non-NVIDIA drivers and/or hardware: these reports, at least, definitely don't belong in an "Nvidia driver causes xorg crash" report.)

I think this bug is related to anything that uses the graphics card for accelleration, be it 3D games, Flash, Blender or Chromium. It also seems to only happen on specific graphics cards, and I'm not 100% sure they're all from NVIDIA. I had a similar thing happen on my laptop with an intgrate Intel 950 card, just after 12.04 release, but that problem vanished soon after. I know there was some issues with the Intel graphics driver on release of 12.04, so maybe that is what fixed it. I don't have this problem at all on
I think the only way you can re-create this bug is by having hardware that causes this bug, and using any software that uses hardware acceleration for a short while. It doesn't seem to be triggered by any specific action beyond that. I get this consistently on Quadro FX 3700, but there is no one thing I do to cause it, and have even had it happened once when I stepped away from the computer for a short while. Generally I have Chromium and the Gnome terminal window open, but have had it happen with just a terminal and Blender.
I've done multiple clean installs of 12.04, and I've done a clean install of Fedora 17 with Gnome 3, and had the same bug happen there. It seems like a tricky bug to figure out, as it's not caused by any specific action, other than a combination of specific hardware and using hardware acceleration, and possibly Gnome.

Same here, also Nvidia.
However, there are 2 users defined on my computer. With my login, I have never encountered the problem since I upgraded 2 months ago but my daughter, who has her own user account, experiences this very often. So same machine, but only one user is affected. The only difference between the two accounts is the language setting. If I login, the PC runs in English, but when she logs in it runs in Dutch.
In terms of programs used, we both watch you tube and other flash based movies. So no difference there.

I just lost 2 days worth of work to this bug. I've tried every solution suggested here with no success. At this point I'm going to have to format back to 11.10. I am highly disappointed that a bug this bad could make it in to the main LTS release. I can't say that I have confidence in Ubuntu as a stable business worthy OS anymore. :(

Like danrgmc above in comment #120, I just tried nvidia driver v302.17 also (via xorg-edgers ppa) but found it seg faulted within a couple of hours. My 8600 GT card has worked fine for years with ubuntu but this seg fault started with Ubuntu 12.04 at nvidia v295.40 and has occurred for all the v295.* and v302.* versions that Nvidia have released since. Luckily the nouveau driver works fine for me (in 3d Unity and Gnome Shell).
This bug has been reported various places in launchpad in many guises (most users don't understand what the bug is - they just get logged out of their DE) and has been reported all over the forums etc but I can not recall anywhere where Canonical and/or Nvidia acknowledge that they recognise this serious bug and are working on a fix. This bug is in it's own league. It is not just the Logging Off issue for me. It is also a dual monitor issue and System Settings shows me as a Laptop when I am running a Desktop. Has anyone personally seen a bug through to its fixed conclusion on this website? I am just not seeing any progress. A statement from Nvidia would be nice so we all can wait in peace. So I am wondering if these bugs get fixed in an update ie one day update manager will be the ubuntu bug messiah and magically fix the bug? Is that the way it works? Or do I have to be more proactive and look for and apply the bug fixes? Seriously considering going back to 11.10 where things worked. Never - Never - never (since i have been using ubuntu from version 8) have I ever lost work or time because of a nasty bug like this one.

I was expecting the same thing since 12.04 had just come out. I thought for sure the updater would magically fix it for me the next day or the day after. Two months down the road, still experiencing daily crashes I found this thread. Tried all the suggestions here to no avail. I even attempted to generate my own stack trace so I could post it here and maybe help, but I didn't really have time to figure it all out properly. Then I lost two days of work to a crash and I finally couldn't wait any longer.
I formatted back to 11.10 and I've been happily productive ever since without a single crash. I recommend everyone experiencing this problem who requires stability from their machines to do the same until this bug gets fixed.

Hi everybody,
Like I said earlier, I've personally been using Precise with Unity on one of my main test machines since the alpha stage, and haven't seen any X crashes that weren't due to bugs that have since been fixed, and I certainly haven't seen random, frequent X crashes like what seems to be described here. That machine has its drivers and GPUs swapped frequently, and for as long as I have been using Precise, I have always used 295 or later drivers on it. (Compiz does seem to crash frequently, but it always recovers, without disturbing any of the applications or windows I have open.)
In addition to my own personal experience, which is obviously a tiny sample, the driver goes through extensive automated and manual testing on many different hardware configurations, and on a variety of distributions, including Ubuntu 12.04. We haven't seen any issues that cause X to crash sporadically, as seems to be described here.
With that in mind, we're obviously missing something important that's required to reproduce this bug (if it is even just a single bug: it's hard to tell, since the symptom is fairly generic). If we can collect as much detail as possible from everybody who is affected, that would help us understand what is happening better. The more information you provide, the better our chances for reproducing the issue at NVIDIA. Please provide as many of the following as possible:
1) An nvidia-
2) A detailed description of what you were doing at the time of the crash.
3) If you are familiar with using gdb, stack traces from the crashing server, with X debug symbols installed, would be very helpful. If you're not familiar with gdb, but want to try to provide a stack trace anyway, you can try following these steps:
a) Install X debug symbols (sudo apt-get install xserver-
b) Start your desktop session, as normal
c) For good measure, capture the DSO load base of the NVIDIA driver, in case it shows up in the stack trace of the crashing server. (grep nvidia_drv.so /proc/`pidof X`/maps) - you may need to do this as root. Stash this information away, and if nvidia_drv.so shows up in your backtrace when you get one, submit it along with everything else.
d) Log into your system *FROM ANOTHER MACHINE* and attach a debugger to the already running X server (gdb Xorg `pidof X`): it's important that you do this from another machine over ssh, because after the debugger is attached, X will be frozen until you continue. If you start the debugger from a VT on the same machine, when X crashes later, it will be frozen, and you probably won't be able to switch to your VT running the debugger
e) After the debugger is attached, type "continue" (or just "c") at the gdb prompt and hit enter
f) Use your system, leaving the debugger attached the whole time. ...

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for the additional information.
This problem has been reported and Engineering is actively investigating the issue. We aim to fix this for our upcoming 304.x driver in July, but as you know schedules can change.
I have added myself to the bug report so I will be notified when this is fixed, and I will notify you at that time.
So if it is acceptable with you, I will close this support case and will inform you when the fix is available.
Best regards,
Mike

I hope that this information is helpful.

This bug has been around from 11.04 for me. I have Nvidia QuadroFX3800M in HP 8740w Mobile Workstation. I have basically given up on Ubuntu on my workstation. I have found this bug with all fresh installs and with all versions of Nvidia drivers from Ubuntu and Nvidia directly. OS has other stability issues without the Nvidia drivers (though these may be related). Instead of adding new features lets get this OS more stable. The Stability has never been as good as 9.10 in a long while. I am using a netbook with 10.04 that works amazingly well (though thers no Broadcom Xtal HD acceleration driversfor Ubuntu). Macs are beginning to look a lot more attractive and Ubuntu has such potential. :-(

I continue to experience this bug irrespective of which graphics driver I have installed. In my case, whenever I am using the keyboard the system is at risk of a crash. I know this because on this particular machine, I rarely use the keyboard as it is being used primarily as a virtualisation server, however, when I use the keyboard, a crash will happen quite quickly, this seems to be more likely if I have typed a number key or a period sign.
This machine can stay stable for days, or even weeks provided that the keyboard is not used.

Hello, this is just to say that I experienced this issu as well. For me, it is a shame, but the only way I managed to have a normal session logged in has been to begin using only the onboard graphic card instead of my Nvidia. In order to do that, I blacklisted all the drivers from Nvidia.
I know it is a desperate solution but it worked. Hope it helps.

I am getting this issue but it also happens on HTML5 videos and not just Flash. I would say watching YouTube, I crash once every 20 minutes on average. Sometimes it reboots my machine and sometimes it just restarts X.
Using 12.04 (3.2.0-26-generic)
Nvidia driver 295.40
Example in my logs:

Hope this is a high priority, though I know Ubuntu has zero control over the binary Nvidia drivers. In any case, it makes watching YouTube vids impossible, whether they be HTML5 or Flash.

You can count me in as well.
Hope this get sorted out quickly... Can't deal with this for so long... My computer is my main tool for work.
I know this is free software, and that we should be grateful for the people who makes this happens, but if you want to convince me to stick to your distro and even shell some bucks in the software center, which I'm seriously considering... interested in the cloud storage and some apps.
However, if the distro keeps on crashing like this for so long, I'll just look elsewhere or as a last resort, install windows again.
I've always had pretty bad experiences in the past, mainly due because I was using bleeding edge hardware, but I have slacked on upgrading, and last time I built my computer back 5 years ago, I made a pretty good one, and still going fine today...
So I thought that with a 5 years computer, the hardware issue would all be resolved by now.. seems nvidia is still the same as it always been... ati was always the way to go... too bad I wasn't expecting to run linux when I picked that nvidia card...
Bryce Harrington (bryce) wrote : | #179 |
Because the issue is in the proprietary video driver, there is little we can do on the distro end, except escalate to an NVIDIA engineer, which we have done.
The NVIDIA engineer posted here on this bug, that he was not able to reproduce it on his end:

@Bryce
I know I could have attached log and more infos about my crashes, but I figured that after all these logs people have submitted so far, that it would be pretty much of the same... since we all experience the same problem.
The issue might be on NVidia's side... but the way Ubuntu is dealing with this is highly unprofessional.. if that issue what happening on Windows, you can be sure that this issue would be resolved relatively quickly. Personally, in more than 15 years of computing, and the majority of it with Microsoft OSes, I have never seen a problem stick for so long.
Fortunately for me, I just joined in, but seeing that this bug is still here after so long... I dunno...
Look, NVidia isn't a 3rd or 4th player in the video card industry... So you can be sure there is a lot of people running NVidia's card... this cannot be ignored like this. At least, make the default selection to Ubuntu 2D, so that people joining in aren't experiencing problems right after they reboot on their first install. This really give a bad opinion about the product.
Fortunately, I've been around and played many times with Linux in the past, going back to kernel 1.x, so I'm more forgiving and my past experiences taught me to choose ATi when building a computer to use with Linux. Unfortunately, I didn't planned on running it when I built this one a couple of years ago.
I would have also thought that NVidia might have stepped up their game and finally get some work done on their linux driver... seems the open source project might get there faster.
But we are straying outside the subject... just wanted to voice out my thoughts on the matter... If I had been a totally new linux user, trying Ubuntu 12.04 and having problems after first boot... it would have certainly be enough to make me put the windows dvd back in and re-install.
Regarding the crashes, I decided to give a try to Ubuntu 2d, and seems like my crashes are gone. Ever since I switched to it yesterday, I haven't had a single crash.
And I have had Photoshop opened since, did plenty of work without losing anything, with my browser opened and using it when I needed.
I noticed there was a couple of important packages that was updated yesterday, with gnome that was automatically added in an apt-get upgrade. Haven't tried it yet, since I kinda like unity, and it's running great now...
Really happy about this work-around, because I wouldnt have installed the Nouveau drivers, since it probably wouldnt run so well with Photoshop extended... Haven't tried, but I get that feeling.
So this solution is very good for me, only losing a bit of eye candy, but I wasn't using the 3d part of compiz, just some extra visuals...
But if I were working at Ubuntu, I would really be concerned about this issue.... in those 4-5 months the bug existed, you might have lost quite a few potential customers... those that will try linux for the first time and get this issue will most certainly go back to windows, or try a different distro.
All in all, I must say that Linux/Ubuntu made some really nice improvements since the last time I tried it... this might just be the time when I will leave Windows fo...

Sorry if there is any confusion, but the issue I believe you are referring to, which we do have an internal reproduction of, is not known to necessarily be the same issue as what people are describing here. We believe that some people on this thread might be affected by this issue, but as I said earlier, the reports on this thread conflict with each other on many levels, and at this time, I find it hard to believe that everybody reporting here is actually experiencing exactly the same problem.
This is why, despite the seemingly similar reports here, it is important that as much detail about the specific problem each person is experiencing be provided. I should note that the reproduction we have in house of the issue that we believe may be related to some of the reports here is on a single system so far: attempts to reproduce the problem on other systems so far have failed; we do not yet understand what is specific to this system that allows it to reproduce the issue while others do not. The person who eventually reproduced the issue internally went through dozens of systems before finding the one that finally reproduced it.
Also, the issue we have reproduced internally has specific reproduction steps. The reports here lack good reproduction steps. For reference, the specific reproduction steps given are:
Repro steps (A):
1. Open Firefox and play video from the link http://
2. Make it full screen
3. Just keep moving the mouse cursor over the video; after some time, the X server will crash.
Repro steps (B):
1. Open 4 to 5 seperate Firefox windows and play youtube HD videos
2. Make sure to view with large player (no need to make it fullscreen)
3. After some time (say for 3 to 5min), we can observe an X server crash.
This is reproducible regardless of whether or not VDPAU is used.

@natew: NVIDIA does not have access to the nvnews.net forum at this time, either. I was not directly involved in the attempts to reproduce the issue described above, but as reported by the person who did reproduce this issue, we did try several systems with chips that are similar to the GeForce 285m, without success.
I see that you're the original reporter of this bug on launchpad, and you have posted a backtrace from gdb captured during the crash. Thanks for that, but to make the backtrace more readable, do you think you could capture another one with debugging symbols installed for the X server, and with the DSO load base of nvidia_drv.so within X captured?

I've noticed that this bug is only present when there's high network activity.
If I'm not running any torrents or streaming anything the system will stay logged into the same session indefinitely, but if I'm downloading lots of torrents the session will log out randomly even if I'm not doing anything graphics-intensive (eg, 5 mins ago it logged me out while the only things open were qbittorrent and a nautilus window).
I don't think it actually is a graphics driver issue at all. I'd suggest looking into the network drivers if you're unable to find anything wrong with the graphics drivers.
danrgmc (danrgmc-yahoo) wrote : | #190 |
I@disorder: I don't think you share what most of us are experiencing. This must be related by something in the Nvidia drivers since many of us are affected simply by watching videos; not necessarily streaming or downloading. If I don't use accelerated graphics or '3
d' mode or if I use the Nouveau driver I never have this problem.

@ddadap
I have 12.04 32bit with a NVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 290 dual monitor with one large X Screen.
I've experienced this problem since I updated to 12.04, crashes often enough to seriously disturb my work.
It might be network activity related, but the crash is in the nvidia driver (both 295.40 and 302.07).
Actually it's 2 crash behavior for me; one is when screen totally freeze up but it's still possible connect; the other is when screen goes black and the login screen appears. I think sometimes the nvidia drivers hangs instead of crashes.
Attached is gdb backtrace (only one method), maps and nvidia bug report.
Reproducable by running running the following site (that measures your broadband):
1. Open http://
2. Press "STARTA MÄTNINGEN"
3. If no crash then press "Mät igen" (to the right) and repeat step 2.
4. While doing this scroll up and down in another window.
- Firefox will cause crash
- Sublime Text 2 causes crash faster (http://
It's not necessary to run any browser or any flash content. But crash usually happens for me during scroll.

Long story short - I busted 12.04 trying to get it to work. So instead of re-installing 12.04 I just re-installed 11.10 . Sorry for tapping out guys but I have a stable system with Unity and Compiz. @ag-restringere,
you aren't supposed to install the drivers from the .run while X is running. if you took the time to read the README, you would have seen this:
"Before you Begin
Before you begin the installation, exit the X server and terminate all OpenGL applications (note that it is possible that some OpenGL applications persist even after the X server has stopped). You should also set the default run level on your system such that it will boot to a VGA console, and not directly to X. Doing so will make it easier to recover if there is a problem during the installation process. See Appendix J, Tips for New Linux Users for details."

was running firefox and cpu was doing nothing ~6%, and ram has ~50% not used. system uptime ~2days.
do note this also happens in lucid however i remeber upgrade the kernel? manualy 3.4? when this started happening usally it triagers when open firefox and force closing it then open again, don't remember if it was private browsing or not.

I see that there is a new Nvidia driver that apparently fixes this problem. Can we pretty please get this update in the official Precise Pangolin repos. This is a critical issue for the users with the affected hardware, effectively making the OS more or less useless for them.
I know you can install the driver manually, but would much rather have a working driver in the repos.

@Hector, did you update Xorg after installing the driver? It might have
replaced some libraries that the nVidia driver relies on. Try a sanity
check with the .sh driver package and the --sanity flag. It might fix
things for you.

Well I see a bunch of people have this problem as well, I run KDE (with effects) and it logs me out from time to time. Mainly just running Opera and irssi. Suspect it must be some flash via Opera than which cause the logoff.
Running Kubuntu 12.04, nVidia 295.40, and KDE 4.9
I had 240GTS card which I sent back to the store because I thought it was a hardware fail, that said, it still may be because of heavier hangups. Now I am using the backup card which is 8500GT, and here I never have hard hangups, but logs me out.
I hope I don't get my 240GTS back now because of faulty drivers, that will be waste of cash.

Even with the latest Xorg from xorg edgers PPA and the lateste nvidia driver, Unity on 12.10 immediately crashes with a segmentation fault.
The sad part is that now they removed Unity 2D and I am also unable to install Classic Gnome, so there is NO fallback. I am trying to work with nouveau now, and oh boy is that experience unstable. Unity just stops working on a regular basis.
When I bought this new laptop which only has a dedicated Nvidia card, I thought I would be stepping up from my Dell which had an Intel and Nvidia card. That Intel card worked flawlessly with Unity in 12.10 alpha 3, and even the discrete Nvidia card worked like a charm with Bumblebee.
Needless to say, this is extremely annoying.
Oh, and what is with the dependency of nvidia-current on xorg abi 10, 11, and 12?

not true. even with the latest driver installed, downloading a simple program from the ubuntu software center started causing the random log outs again. thanks to a suggestion from @Romuald C. i used the .run file provided by nvidia to reinstall the driver instead of using a deb package. now my machine seems to be running fine, but then again it was running just fine when i first installed the new drivers as well before the log outs started happening again.

This is definitely related to Xorg. I have crashes left and right, regardless whether I am using nvidia-current or nouveau. Nouveau crashes less, but its always a sefault in Xorg it seems.
The most stable workaround for me is to run Classic Gnome, and even there, certain apps trigger a crash (Thunderbird, Firefox, Online Account from within System Settings....).
I've attached a Xorg crash log from /var/crash as reference...

This bug is specifically for XOrg crashes caused by the NVidia driver. X can crash for other reasons but that is not this bug. Random logouts are also not this bug unless caused by the NVidia driver causing X to crash. You'll likely want to open a new bug.
Rocko (rockorequin) wrote : | #269 |

Im not that much into kernel, but I guess this is useless, looks like the kernel found GPUs on the motherboard, right?
Anything more? Add some trace mode?
I have one crash per day, it's easy for me :)

Yes, you're right, those NVRM messages are fine - they just say that the driver found a couple of nvidia GPUs. I was wondering if you were getting Xid errors or the 'attempted to yield the CPU in atomic mode' mentioned earlier in the thread. Your issue might still be an nvidia problem - if the nvidia module locks up the kernel it can stop any further logging - but it might be a separate issue with X or unity. If you can do so, you could try removing one of the GPUs - I vaguely recall seeing other bugs related to running two nvidia cards.

#286, Was that updated version released officially as an update for Ubuntu LTS? Or do I need to add an unofficial repository to be able to install it?
Thanks a lot for the information

Update: finally have a usable desktop with the 304.51 driver. its been about 2 full weeks running great with no hiccups after installing software or updates via the ubuntu software center or update manager. only thing ive noticed is that the random log outs return if i use my laptop on battery. this isnt such a big deal as my laptop is almost 2 years old and only lasts a little over an hour on battery anyway so when im doing serious work my laptop is always plugged in. but again when plugged in it works flawlessly!

Hello everyone.
We have nvidia 304.43 driver in the precise proposed repository which fixes this issue. All you need to do is disable any third party drivers ppa (preferably ppa-purge) then enable the precise-proposed repository from software sources. then sudo apt-get update and after that you just need to go to 'Additional drivers' and select nvidia graphics drivers update and just install.

@Omer - Hi, Can you explain for the noob please?
Re: "enable the precise-proposed repository from software sources."
How to do this from the command line please? (lightdm, gnome and unity graphics are garbled so I have to use command line)
Also is it possible to do this only for updates to do with the graphics. I need the rest of the system to use a stable repo.
Thanks.

I enabled precise-proposed (under the updates tab of the repositories dialog) and I've updated a number of times. I got a ton of updates but my nvidia drivers are still at 295.40 and still crashing.

Use a package manager like Synaptic to select only nvidia driver and upgrade it without all others proposed packages.

304.51 is the least crashy version for me. It was really easy to reproduce the crash with both 304.43 and 304.48, but on 304.51 it only happens occasionally.

- Xorg.0.log per today's freeze Edit (49.9 KiB, text/plain)
Hi there,
Still having freezes with 304.51 on a Linux-x86_64 Ubuntu 12.04, X.Org X Server 1.11.3
2x560 Ti in SLI with 3 monitors in Xinerama
Xorgs shows 100% cpu in top:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
1949 root 20 0 295m 189m 48m R 100 3.2 17:13.36 /usr/bin/X :0 vt7 -br -nolisten tcp -auth /var/run/
See attached Xorg log for details.
I can provide files, or trace activity or whatever you need to find and correct the bug; just ask me !
Strange thing, the driver just before seemed to work well, about "[mi] EQ overflow continuing. " it was somehow adaptive or something like that, then, it was freezing for a second, and then, continue.
With the 304.51 I don't see this behaviour anymore, and then X goes 100% and freezes.
(its all about X freezing, not crashing or such).
Cheers,

I saw previous weeks that this EQ size goes from 512 then 1024 then.. .etc.. 2^n ... and this is avoiding the total freeze... I had yesterday.. So I'm completely lost. Is my problem related to this thread's bug? Another one I couldn't find? Did nvidia solve this thread's bug or not? What about mine???
Lost!! :)

Hi everyone !
On Quantal I still have the bug with 304.51, but experimental 310.14 seems to be okay for the moment !
Testing is simple for me, scrolling this web page make 304.51 crashes every time, but for the moment 310.14 resists :)
Most of the time nouveau opensource driver is more efficient and less-buggy, I recommend it until you need something not provided (DisplayPort does not work well for example).
Hope it helps...

Not fixed for me. Crash happens every 2 to 3 hours, especially when opening new windows and/or new programms. Is really annoying. Nouveau drivers are useless: they crash to: make artefacts on my screen. Using all different versions of Nvidia driver didn't solve this problem. System is very unstable.
