Per your advice below to burn a CD and look for the drives. I will do that
and the rebuild to test but wanted to further clarify my description of
"Hangs every time at..."; If I leave it for 2 to 3 minutes it will
eventually boot up so it does see the drives, eventually. Does that change
the dynamic of the problem?
Burn a CD from the daily ISO and boot it
(http://
desktop, then open Applications/
fdisk -l'. You ought to be able to see your disk partitions, though they
will be named sdX instead of hdX.

I reinstalled and updated to the most recent Feisty image (today) and still
am experiencing the hang related to ATA. I also noticed my DVD is not
installed/mounted. It was with Edgy just before the reinstall.

Clarification...the DVD does show up but not in "Places" only in "Computer"
view. CD shows up in both. Both are functional.

Possibly worthy of note...all drives from Edgy fstab use "hda..." vs same in
Feisty use "sda...".

I have a workaround for this "hang". If I have any cd mounted in the (CDRW)
drive during boot, the hang does not occur AND the CDRW that doesn't
normally work on boot, works.
Any thoughts???

Your latest comment sounds a lot like some libata quirks that we worked on earlier today. Now that you have a way of booting, attach (do not paste) the output of these commands:
lspci -vvn > lspci.txt
dmesg > dmesg.txt
sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt
Also, you don't need to paste the history of every email exchange. Just your current comments are fine.

The kernel is getting updated over the weekend, so please try the daily ISO on Monday in hopes of conquering this JMicron problem.

I'm also getting this problem. However, I have 2 SATA drives in the system. One of them is actually an IDE drive with an IDE->SATA converter. And of course, it's this one Ubuntu is on. The other disk is detected by Feisty (in rescue mode off the the Beta CD) but the IDE drive with the converter is not. However, both are detected by the Edgy CD in rescue mode.
Any more info I can give, give me a shout. If you have a different kernel deb I can try, that'd be cool!

Kernel version 2.6.20-14 has appeared in the daily build ISO. Please give it a try.
John Lauck (johnlauck) wrote : | #13 |
ok...
I had a host of issues.
Issue 1 (getting and using ISO):
1. If I saved the Feisty ISO to an NTFS USB drive and burned it to CD
I couldn't boot it on my main PC or in a VM
2. If I saved the Feisty ISO to an NTFS USB drive and burned tried to
boot the ISO I couldn't
3. I downloaded and saved a Dapper ISO to the same drive and did both
steps 1 and 2 above with no problem
4. I finally downloaded the Feisty ISO to the local XFS drive and was
able to boot it into a VM and burn to CD. Then could use Live CD to boot
main PC
5. NOTE - I could also boot and use ALL previous ISOs downloaded into
a VM.
Issue 2 (once I had a usable ISO):
1. Used Live CD, loaded in DVD player, to boot main PC
2. the empty Floppy would spin and finally fail some kind of check
with an error "can't access TTY"
3. Then it tried ata2.01 with 3 failed attempts. "failed to set
xfermode err_mask=0x4"
4. Then tried ata2.00 with a hang. "failed to set xfermode
err_mask=0x40"
5. If I load the Live CD into the CDRW everything boots fine

OK, it looks like 2.6.20-14 has at least improved the boot problems. Once you've booted from CDRW, can you then copy files from the DVD?
John Lauck (johnlauck) wrote : | #15 |
I don't think there was any improvement. See my comments from March 28.

Doesn't solve my problem anyway (IDE -> SATA adapter). Managed to get machine booted with 2.6.20-13 kernel by removing the SATA adapter and connecting the disk on IDE. Installed -14 kernel from apt.
Copy of errors from a recovery boot attached. I didn't add what I assume are the timestamps in square brackets. If they can help, let me know.

As it turns out, there were still some problems with lib-ata/pata in the 2.6.20-14 kernel. The release candidate 2.6.20-15 has hopefully addressed any remaining IDE/SATA issues.

i have a similar problem here i get the message that it is unable to set the xfermod on ata2.00 (also my cd drive! the above mentioned "workaround" works for me (disk in drive during boot) it seems to me that the problem is caused because the system is trying to set udma100 mode on the drive instead of udma33 (perhaps because the drive isn't recognized as being cd instead of hd)
if you look in the syslog file you can see the the system first tries to set to udma100 mode and only 15 seconds later decides to go with udma33 mode.

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-
--or--
2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://
Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I had almost the same issue and after months of tinkering I found that the hard drive was bad ... I tried a new hard drive and it instantly worked. In Gutsy it had no problem with the bad hard drive. I decided to check the hard drives START diagnostics and it failed -- you should look at your START data.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https:/
