i have a similar problem here i get the message that it is unable to set the xfermod on ata2.00 (also my cd drive! the above mentioned "workaround" works for me (disk in drive during boot) it seems to me that the problem is caused because the system is trying to set udma100 mode on the drive instead of udma33 (perhaps because the drive isn't recognized as being cd instead of hd)

if you look in the syslog file you can see the the system first tries to set to udma100 mode and only 15 seconds later decides to go with udma33 mode.
