Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Computer : Apple PowerMac G5
Ubuntu Feisty Herd5 updated with xorg-server-xorg-video-ati-1:6.6.3-2ubuntu3 (ppc)

Xorg used to work properly with herd5 and fails now to start since the last update.
I can still start it with the fbdev driver.

Here's Xorg.0.log :

Kernel bug ?
I've tried the video=ofonly option and I surely can start X with the ati driver this way (though only in 680x480 only and no compiz).

But :
- my kernel for now is 2.6.20-12-powerpc64-smp
- I've just tried to boot with 2.6.20-9 (herd5 kernel) (and after 2.6.20-11), the ati xorg driver and without video=ofonly : no success.

I surely did work when I installed herd5.

I've hit this problem as well on a G5 with Radeon, in Feisty final. Driver package version is 6.6.3-2ubuntu6.

With Ben Herrenschmidt's help, tracked the problem down to an Ubuntu patch which adds some VBE based DDC probing code to the driver as a fallback. That gets triggered on powerpc, and VBE attempts to load int10 which fails horribly, hanging the machine.

Attached patch fixes the problem by disabling the vbe code on powerpc, though I don't know that it's really a correct fix.

As-is, the X.org x86emu doesn't work properly on pretty much all ppc machines. That's why the normal int10 soft-boot path is #if !defined(__powerpc__) already in the driver. It seems like ubuntu applied a patch to X.org ATI driver that causes it to use VBE for EDID in many cases where it wouldn't happen before, thus causing the breakage on machines where VBE won't work properly. I've discussed with some of the X hackers who are working on the X ATI driver and they seem fairly unhappy about this patch in the first place. I think at least, the VBE bit should be made #if !defined(__powerpc__) as well.

Got the same issue on power mac G4 after upgrading from edgy (where I did no had issues). I can use the devfb driver but obviously 3d performances are poor... the GPU is a radeon 7500 (RV200 chip).

I did not understand very well the other solutions exwplained here :$. Is it possible to use the radeon driver?

Saw that with compiz too. Note that the beryl packages at
http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org don't have that problem.

(It's still bloody slow, we need to get Michel Daenzer no copy stuff
backported and adapted to r200 for that to improve)

Can't find the 7.10beta. Do you have a link?
I have never been successful installing any linux (or BSD for that
matter) on my G5. I have an ATI X800 XT installed in my box and I'm
guessing that is my problem.

The patch in comment #4 no longer applies to current -ati source (6.8.0). If someone could provide and test an updated patch, it could possibly be included. Probably this should be reported upstream however.

In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.

I was able to work around this bug on a 1.25Ghz eMac (USB2.0) with onboard ATI Radeon 9200 under intrepid by adding the option "monitor-DVI-0" to the device section of xorg.conf as documented here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=964032&page=3

To find out the name of the connection, boot ubuntu and let the screen flicker then go black. Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 for a terminal and login. Use the command "xrandr --verbose -q -d :0" and look for the header line of each connector:

DVI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 connected 1280x960+0+0 (0x4f) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

In this example it is "monitor-DVI-0" but is may be "monitor-DVI-1", "monitor-VGA-0", "monitor-S-video" or something else depending on your setup.

You then need to add a line to the "Device" section of xorg.conf for your video card that points this connector to the "Identifier" you used in the "Monitor" section of xorg.conf.

Option "monitor-DVI-0" "Configured Monitor"

I opened this bug almost 2 years ago, and I see that the ati driver now works with 3d on my G5. Bug almost closed.

In fact, it may have worked for a long time now. But I didn't know. The last comments did let me find a solution. I didn't have X11 crash at startup with Feisty and Gutsy, but a blank screen, my BenQ monitor saying "no signal".

I tried these days to tweak xorg.conf with "monitor-DVI-0" or "monitor-DVI-1". And it didn't work : still blank screen.

And then I plugged my monitor in the other inlet of my video-card. And voilà !

It works with the Jaunty PPC liveCD from these days. And with Debian Lenny too.

So there's still a bug : I didn't encounter any problems for years with OSX and I was lacking 3D for years with linux and Ubuntu JUST BECAUSE MY MONITOR WAS PLUGGED "IN THE OTHER INLET" of my card.

It's now plugged in what seems to be : monitor-DVI-0. I don't know if I can use both inlets with dual screens. I have only one.

PS : now that liveCDs work on PPC , I my consider go back to Ubuntu one day : I couldn't even install Intrepid and put Lenny (along with Gutsy and osX) on my Mac. No bugs with Lenny :-))

Btw, I don't know if this is even relevant for PPC, but often the RV350 cards need AGPMode settings tweaked to resolve problems with crashes/corruption/etc. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks for details on this.
