Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Hardware PPC G4 1.25GHz with 1.75G memory, Radeon 9000 video card.

Using xubuntu feisty Herd 5 released 16 March 07
kernel version 2.6.20-11.18 (specifically linux-image-2.6.20-11-powerpc)

Booting the kernel with any of the menu options results in Xorg failure followed by system lockup. If the kernel is booted with an added 'single' kernel parameter and X is started from the console then the X fails as per attached "xorg log 0". If the kernel is booted with 'video=ofonly' kernel parameter (which gives unknown stanza from init), X successfully starts with errors as seen in attached "xorg log 1".

The ati driver is loaded both times.

xorg.conf and the output of lspci are also attached.

The initial testing was done from the Desktop CD, but the 'video=' kernel parameter is also required in order to successfully start X from a HD installation. However, the system no longer locks up after X failure.

Downgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati from 1:6.6.3-2ubuntu3 to1:6.6.2-0ubuntu6 gives a more usuable workaraound.

It seems to be
debian/patches/105_fdo_att7409_bug5437.diff

which still calls the int10 emulator via vbe even when the driver
knows that it doesn't have a valid x86 bios.

This sounds identical to bug 63503, which is marked fixed as of Feisty final. I'm marking this a dupe of that one; let me know if it still occurs with the released version of Feisty.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
