Is this the same bug as the screenshots I just received in email?

I have two corruption issues at the moment. This one, on the desktop, and
another just after Unity Greeter, but before my desktop is displayed.

The second bug is captured here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/932611

Nvidia graphics, btw.

Isn't it the job of X or gnome-session-something to set the wallpaper on startup so you don't see corruption? It's possible the corruption is occurring and visible before compiz even starts.

Also, do you see the problem with Unity 2D?

Please also try tapping Ctrl+Alt+F7 or Ctrl+Alt+F8 when on the login screen and after you have logged in, and verify that both are running on #7.

I have seen bugs in the past where lightdm and X11 were using different VTs, so of course the transition between the lightdm VT and the desktop VT was not smooth.

They are on the same VT, so that isn't it.

I am, however, getting the corruption with both Unity 2D and GNOME 3
sessions, so not as likely that it compiz it seems?

<theory> I think Jason said he was using Nvidia (which is non-KMS). It wouldn't be surprising if the nvidia driver didn't clear the video memory used by the new mode or page. That's not necessarily a driver bug, but still possibly an application bug for assuming anything about the state of the framebuffer after a mode change. </theory>

No external monitors mentioned in bug reports (932324 ,933322), happens with nvidia or ati (radeon) with kms enabled.
Bug 933322 incl. some useful images of the issue, which I confirm (five frames with horizontol lines), although it looks worse here, maybe due to custom wallpaper.
