Does this also occur when logging into Ubuntu 2D, or a GNOME Classic (no effects) session?

I'm unable to test this on ATI for now. Could someone else test? This bug might be a duplicate of bug 932324.

Yes, this is reproducible even with Unity 2D and Gnome Classic.

Let's focus this bug on the problem as it pertains to radeon cards. For people with nvidia hardware seeing corruption on login, please use bug #931967.

These two bugs *might* be one and the same, but until we're certain let's treat them as two driver-specific bugs that just happen to have the same symptoms. The reason is because the bug seems not to affect -intel, -nouveau, or -fglrx.

Sarvatt reminds me that -ati has had login corruption in the past. It went away in 11.04/11.10 but he thinks it was just hidden due to the boot speed getting slower in those releases so it would hide the corruption.

Due to bug 919398 wondering if they're related. The graphics corruption was always colourful or rather it displayed the broken user background image.
Recently it's black instead, same as the window underneath, it doesn't display a broken user background image.

Well, since I've mentioned it isn't colourful anymore - rebooted after latest updates and it's colourful again.
But the black hidden background is visible above the truncated user background.

I notice what appears to be the same thing in Precise. In case it helps, my specifics:

- everything is visually fine from boot to presentation of login screen
- after I type my password, before the gray intermediate screen comes up (between login and session) in Unity 2d, my screen flickers briefly and then for about 5 seconds shows multiple corrupted password dialogue boxes scattered around the top of the screen
- my hardware is old ATI IGP stuff
- one other thing that I notice that is different than 11.10, and that is my session background also appears as my login background; that is, I chose the "watch gears" background for my session, and afterwards, whenever I see a login screen, it also has "watch gears"

I believe this is a feature of 12.04

I reported what was marked as a duplicate of bug 931967, but I think it may apply here too, since I'm using AMD Radeon 6310 graphics. I'm using 12.04 Beta 1, and using the fglrx driver. You can see the full details from apport and a photo under bug 947200.
