Bug Description

The Hauppauge WinTV Nova T DVB-Stick fails in Ubuntu 11.10, in Ubuntu 11.04 (and earlier) everything is okay.

If the stick was first connected to Ubuntu 11.04 (where it works) and then attached to Ubuntu 11.10 I get a different dmesg output from Ubuntu 11.10.

But nevertheless it doesn't work.

What makes me uncertain that linux (or v4l) is the culprit...

1. the stick worked on a ubuntu 11.0 daily release from 08.10.2011 and I informed Sebastian Pölsterl (developer of the Gnome DVB-Daemon, https://launchpad.net/gnome-dvb-daemon) that the dvb-daemon 0.24 works great in Ubuntu 11.10

2. after some release upgrades (but no kernel-upgrade) it refused to work. My guess is it has to to with udev (but it's only a guess)

3. pulling latest v4l from git and installing it doesn't bring the stick alive (maybe I should try again with a 'clean' stick first attached on ubuntu 11.04)

dmesg from ubuntu 11.10 (with stick attached on ubuntu 11.04 before)

Im sorry neither kernel 3.1rc9 nor 3.1.daily (3.1.0-999.201110171146) did solve the problem

As I've written I've tried too latest v4l git. So either the problem is in v4l itself - wrong frontend selected - or somewhere else.

As I've googled in the meanwhile i2c errors are serious, and are not related to udev (which was my faulty guess). So - as the usb id's for the device are correct - I believe now that something inside v4l goes wrong. I investigate further to find out the mystery.

BTW. another user is affected see : http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/dvb-t-stick-wird-von-kaffeine-nicht-mehr-erkannt/ (regards, german only)

I'm sorry to tell that I can't verify if kernel 3.0.9 solves the regression or not.

As the stick showed the same errors after installing kernel 3.0.9 as mainline build, I've done a crosscheck with Ubuntu 11.04 (where the stick always worked). Even there no frontend attached.

Seems the stick decided: Too many tests, better I stay dead. Don't know if he died by ages, by accident or what ever.

But thanks to all involved trying to make it work.

staedtler-przyborski, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
