Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

When empathy goes offline then online, or my account is disabled and re-enabled, or when the chat client is quit and restarted, some small number of randomly selected contacts are displayed either in the "Ungrouped" or default "Buddies" groups. It's not always the same contact, but there seems to be several contacts to whom this happens more frequently.

If it matters, the only account that I use is IBM Sametime.

Ditto. I tried putting all my contacts in "Friends", and after a restart, many of them were back in "Buddies". This happens with different protocols (including linked clients), e.g. MSN, FB chat, and in Empathy 2.32 and 3.0.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

It seems to pull the group memberships from the chat service each time empathy is opened. For example, if you have a group setup in your facebook contacts, then each time you open empathy, the members of that group will be listed in that group, even if you changed it last time you were in empathy.

I'm not sure this is a bug, or more a feature request to the empathy team.

If you wish to change your group layout, I would suggest doing it in facebook, or google talk, or whatever other service you use, then it will show up in empathy that way.

I guess if the intention were to read and display groups without changing them, there would not be an 'add group' feature at all or it would not be possible to change groups by drag&drop.

The problem might be related to libfolks. I think libfolks use all backends read only and if the change group operation is implemented through libfolks, nothing will be updated at the backend server.

#6 is not working for me. I recreated facebook groups and all contacts in new groups are listed as "Ungrouped". This was working before, and it seems that new Facebook group system changed everything

Why is this a facebook problem? Does new facebook group system prevent manipulation of groups or what?
