Description of bug/status/progression in forum post below ("IMPORTANT: No control over touchpad on Dell inspiron 15R makes Ubuntu unuseable").

This bug renders Ubuntu UNUSEABLE with the Dell Inspiron 15R (standard laptop from Dell) and also laptops which don't use the 'synaptic' touchpad driver (see forum post).

Dell Inspiron 1525, Kubuntu 10.04. Enabling/disabling works, touchpad buttons work, but moving the cursor via the touchpad doesn't. Tried kubuntu systemsettings, gsynaptics and gpointing-device-settings. The first two didn't do anything, the latter at least could switch the device on/of.

can I ask you -- (because I still have the laptop (dell wants to pick it up
wednesday)) -- is it fixed now??? you mean I can re-install ubuntu and it will
be ok?

please tell me now so I can start using the laptop (dell inspiron 15R)

I've readed the posts on the forum and it seems not fixed.

Tried kubuntu systemsettings, gsynaptics and gpointing-device-settings. The first two didn't do anything, the latter at least could switch the device on/of.

"15R" appears to be a name for many different models.

I have the same laptop model (Inspiron 1545), which I bought from Dell with Ubuntu 9.10 pre-installed. Everything worked until the touchpad broke in late November 2010. However, my symptoms are slightly different: I can't use the right touchpad button but can move the cursor. Tapping is extremely sensitive and can't be disabled. See my bug report:

its the same bug -- as I recall there is no support of 'alps'

ps2 is the lowest level driver

It might be the same bug, but only if your computer does not recognize your touchpad, in which case it's not a bug in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics but either in the Linux kernel or in udev. To check how it's recognized, could you run these commands and post the output:

sudo tpconfig -i

cat /proc/bus/input/devices

xinput --list
