Bug Description

I hope I haven't come to the wrong place to report this: The German-language translation of Inkscape 0.47 (on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) contains a spelling error: If you use the "Save" command when there are no changes to be saved, the status bar reads: "Keine Änderungen, die gespeichert werden müßten."

The correct spelling has been "müssten" and not "müßten" since the German spelling reform of 1996.

The status line message reads: "Es müssen keine Änderungen gespeichert werden.". Possibly yet another case where Ubuntu uses its own translation files which have not been updated from Inkscape's source tree instead of the ones included in the Inkscape package? -> see bug #498362 for another example.

However 'ß' is used all over the German interface - if you really want to strictly adhere to the German spelling reform of 1996 I think you'd have to change it globally, not just for one message string.

~suv: The 1996 spelling reform didn't abolish ß, it's just used less often now. I don't know if there are other misspellings, I just found this one.

Inkscape's official translation file used for the German interface is here:

(Note: the page takes quite a while to load in the browser)

I don't know the details (nor do I need to - German spelling in Switzerland never used the 'ß' ;-) ), but I was under the impression that it no longer needs to be used at all after the spelling reform. I don't feel qualified to further comment on that, but I will subscribe the current maintainer of the German translation

@Uwesch - does the official Inkscape translation need to be updating the use of 'ß'?

@JazzyNico - can you confirm the different strings used by Ubuntu's Inkscape package and a version compiled from bzr trunk?

If confirmed, this report affects <https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations> and is 'Invalid' as reported in Inkscape - the request to fully adhere to the German spelling reform of 1996 should IMHO then be filed as separate request (if it can be confirmed to also apply to Inkscape's official German translation (i.e. incorrect use of 'ß')).

@suv. Yes, I confirm this difference between the 0.47 Ubuntu package and the 0.47.x branch (http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/RELEASE_0_47_BRANCH/annotate/head%3A/po/de.po#L5756).

darkweasel, thanks for reporting the bug. We've now got a dedicated project to track translations issues: the ubuntu-translations project. Sorry for the delay in responding, but the bug just came to the translations team radar right now.

I'm assigning it to the German translation team to have a look at.

I've changed the current translation [0] of string 2086 »No changes need to be saved.« that was »Keine Änderungen, die gespeichert werden müßten.« in Inkscape for Ubuntu […|Lucid|Maverick|Natty] to »Es müssen keine Änderungen gespeichert werden.«, which is also the packaged string and correct.

Therefore I change the status of this bug to »Fix committed« now.

The fix is released for Natty now. But not for e.g. Maverick yet. I don't know whether it's fixed for Lucid already.

Ubuntu Translations bugtracker cleanup. Sorry for the spam.

This bug was marked as Fix Committed a long time ago, and it must be safe to presume that the fix is released in a recent release of Ubuntu. If it is not, please open another bug.
