Bug Description

[ Binary package hint: gdm ] <---- Line incorrect & removed. 6:30am, May 8th, 2010 - Jack Thomas

Binary package hint: Xorg-server <------- Considered correct as of 6:39am, May 8th, 2010. Added by Jack Thomas / zipperback

Fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64bit version.

The system appears to simply stop responding at random times.

No mouse response, no keyboard response. Nothing.
The system stops responding for up to a minute or so at a time, and then begins responding again.

My hardware is an AMD Phenom X4 processor, 7GB ram, ATI Radeon 3200 video.

The system stops responding with the default video driver, it also stops responding if I install the restricted closed source video driver. Disabling compiz appears to have no effect on this problem.

No sure what logs people would like to see, but I will be happy to upload any information as required to try and track this down.

affects: gdm (Ubuntu) → xorg-server (Ubuntu)

Is this something different than what apport-collect was looking for but couldn't find?

Should I check to see if something else is missing in the default install?

I launched synaptic and selected the following packages for reinstall:

xorg
xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg

synaptic reinstalled these packages without any problem, so I tried to collect the report once again.

apport-collect 574152

jack@daywalker:~$ apport-collect 574152
Package xorg-server not installed and no hook available, ignoring

The system still says its not installed, although obviously it is because I'm in the gnome desktop environment and it's running on top of X.

I am going to reboot the system since I have reinstalled the xorg-server to see if this will do anything at all, perhaps since it's been reinstalled it will then be able to see it.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I might be able to manually generate the require debug logs that we can work from?

What is the name of the actual package that the apport-collect utility is trying to find?
According to the failure response back it appears to be looking for xorg-server however that package isn't available from any repository that I have.

jack@daywalker:~$ apt-cache search xorg-server

That yields no response back for any package.

Should this utility be actually looking for xserver-xorg?

I checked with man apport-collect to see if I could specify a specific package such as xserver-xorg but this doesn't appear to be an option at this time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and if there is anything I can do from my end to help with tracking this down I would be happy to do it.

Thank you for your assistance,

Hi Jack,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you

Hi Bryce,

I have reproduced the bug in Lucid.

System experiences random periods of nonresponse.

When it happens the mouse and keyboard stop responding as if the system is totally frozen.

The last time I encountered the bug, I pressed my caps lock key several times to see if the keyboard indicator light would turn on and off. The system gave no indication of acknowledging the key press, so it appeared to be totally unresponsive.

I had top running in a terminal window on my gnome desktop the last time the bug event happened, and it looked like top stopped updating the information being displayed until the system became responsive once again. I will create an ssh connection from my laptop which is running Ubuntu 9.10 to the system I am having problems with. When the Lucid system stops responding, I will see if there is any response in a previously active ssh session.

How do I change the system so that xorg-server will be recognized by apport-collect?

Anytime I run apport-collect 574152 I get the same error message.

"Package xorg-server not installed and no hook available, ignoring"

So my question is What is missing from my system that is causing the apport-collect code to miss the hook and think that my xserver is not installed, which is clearly is installed because Im running the gnome desktop and synaptic shows xserver-xorg being installed.

Suggestions?

Bryce,

I believe that I have all the files uploaded which should have been generated with the apport-collect 574152

I had to create them using the apport-bug and generate a new bug report and then manually copy them over here.

For some unknown reason which we haven't tracked down yet, apport-collect still doesn't think that the xserver is installed and running. Obviously this is an issue, but at least we have more to work with for now.

Please let me know what else you need from me so we can work on this.

Thank you for your assistance,

And is xorg really the right package, or a just a side effect? The filesystem bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/515937 seemed a good explanation to me.

I'm also having this problem on 32 bit Kubuntu upgraded from 9.10 running kdm, so it's definitely not a gdm problem. Usually it's one random program that freezes on me for about 30 seconds and everything else is usually usable. This happens probably once every 20 minutes or so and makes it extremely difficult to work.

Completely unsolicited advice as I was searching for another bug: what's /etc/nsswitch.conf look like? What happens if you change the "hosts" line to "hosts: files dns"? and change "passwd", "group" and "shadow" all to "compat" alone?

The symptoms you describe are identical to what I experienced a few years ago with a broken /etc/nsswitch.conf--the file had some questionable settings involving Kerberos and LDAP.

I also have been having system freezes since 10.04. Two types of symptoms ,
1. mouse hangs , does not seem to depend on any particular activity, only cure is hard boot.
2. if sound is playing approx 2 seconds of sound is repeated continuously in addition to mouse freeze. Only cure is hard boot.

This has happened on clean installs of 10.04, 10.1 and 11.4 , all exactly same symptoms.

Only workaround I have found is to boot with acpi=off in GRUB , never had a freeze using this option but with this option system will not power off with the "shutdown" command so have to manually power off (not good) .

I have been affected by this bug since I upgraded to 10.04 64bit in May 2010.

The system crashes a couple of times a day. The crash seems to happen at random times, regardless if it is used or not.

Symptoms: sudden, complete freeze
- screen freezes (the mouse cursor does not move, the keyboard cursor does not blink..)
- caps lock, num lock etc. do not change keyboard led status
- the system does not respond to ping
- no traces in logs (that I can see)
- the system does not recover (tried to wait for 24h a couple of times), the only cure in hard reboot
