Bug Description

Binary package hint: kpdf

Kpdf version 0.5.2 - KDE version 3.5.2
Kubuntu version Dapper
kpdf package version 4:3.5.2-0ubuntu6 installed via apt-get using standard kubuntu repositories

When I print a document from kpdf, the kprinter dialog appears and I check that duplex printing is set to off (which is by the way the default for my printer).
Regardless of that setting, the document is printed with duplex on (long side).

First I thought it was a bug with kdeprint or kprinter but since it only happens with kpdf (not with acroread or xpdf, even when those apps use kprinter) I'm pretty confident it is a kpdf bug.

In case it helps, my printer is a HP 6122 with duplex support using the recommended hpijs driver ( HP DeskJet 6122 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended) - HPLIP 0.9.7).

This happens with every pdf file I print regardless of its origin (creation method) and its number of pages (even single page documents are printed with duplex : the second side remains empty but passes through the printer.

This does not happen with document printed by other apps, even kde ones like a web page printed by konqueror or a pdf printed by kghostview.

As far as I am concerned, this bug makes kpdf unusable !

PS
I found out that the kpdf provided by kubuntu is not the real kpdf ssued by kde but a patched one to use poppler instead of xpdf.
Is this correct ?
If it is, is this information provided anywhere by kubuntu ? I think it should be clearly stated as such

I have this same problem. Only kpdf prints duplex all the time, I have to print everything in Acroread now. It started doing this about 4-5 months ago, I think. My printer is an HP laserjet 4050N.

According to KDE's bugzilla this is due to the poppler patch used by (K)Ubuntu.
See http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131296.

Possibly bug 47263 is related. (But I'm not sure)

I can confirm this too (KPDF 0.5.5/Ubuntu edgy/HP LJ 2200d): kpdf prints as duplex (longside), regardless of the setting in the printer dialog or the printer driver's default setting (via CUPS). This reminds me on bug 47649 (kpdf always prints as portrait and never as landscape), which also describes a case where kpdf ignores the appropriate print settings

I can confirm this on Kubuntu Feisty Beta (kpdf 0.5.6). I have an HP LaserJet 2200 at work and print pdf documents often.
What's wrong with the original non patched KPDF? This bug makes Kubuntu's KPDF absolutely unusable :(

Is anyone from Ubuntu ever going to respond to this?

I have been lurking for months waiting for a resolution.

For the record... same issue here. LaserJet 2200dtn.

Been happening since some time during 6.10. I just upgraded to 7.04, and was appalled to see that the bug had not been fixed.

I just found out that the unsupported KPDF 3.5.7 packages for edgy (http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-357.php) are build without the controversal poppler patch, and duplex printing again works for me (and also landscape printing works fine again - see bug 47649).

I think it was already mentioned that this is still present in KPDF 0.5.6/KDE 3.5.6. This is probably also already obvious (since poppler seems to be at fault here) but I still wanted to add that this is not specific to HP printers - I have the same problem with a Samsung ML-3051ND.

Also: this is very annoying, since KPDF is the KDE app I probably use most for printing.

So, KPDF 0.5.8/KDE 3.5.8 and KPDF is still useless for printing. In other words, Kubuntu is worthless on my work computer.

Just want to confirm, that the problem is still present for 3.5.8 on gutsy. It is a very annoying bug. Is there any workaround for this problem using kpdf?

As a workaround, installing the package for feisty from
http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-358/pool/kdegraphics/kpdf_3.5.8-0ubuntu1~feisty1_i386.deb
works fine for me.

I can confirm that with Ubunutu Hardy and HP Laserjet 1100 the Landscape print does not work for me.

This makes me want to scream. As already noted this makes kpdf *unusable* for quite a few users. I simply can't understand how it comes about that this major showstopper isn't fixed for godsakes YEARS now.

I can confirm the bug on Hardy. Again, as mentioned above, installing the package for feisty from
http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-358/pool/kdegraphics/kpdf_3.5.8-0ubuntu1~feisty1_i386.deb
works fine for me.

WHY does nobody react on this problem? This bug should be considered as a severe problem.

Confirmed on 8.04, amd64.

Printer: Dell mfp 3115cn.
It works nicely, but kpdf sends files which are identified by the dell printer as size letter. And the printer does not have a nice option to use another type of paper for a given job. Son cannot print.

So after a few years with kpdf I have to stop using it until this bug is resolved.

I can't get this feisty package for 3.5.8 anymore ... someone got a link on it?

If compiling my own (apt-get source, etc.), how do I build a working kpdf?

I have the opposite problem in Hardy, that is, even with the duplex option enabled, it always prints on one side. However, evince works fine.

The printer is a HP Laserjet 4200dtm with driver HP LaserJet 4200 Series Postscript (recommended).

I'll add my own confirmation - Toshiba eStudio printer, Hardy 64-bit, KDE 3.5.9. That this bug has been left for so long is ridiculous - especially since it has multiple confirmations and there seems to be a simple fix (ie stop breaking it).
The good news is that Okular prints ok, so there is hope for KDE4 desktops.

I confirm this bug with identical symptoms in HP 2015dn. Unfortunately, evince prints barlines of music scores from GNU LilyPond too thick! KPDF prints them well, but always double sided. I cannot understand how bugs are managed, but it is now two years old !!!

The 3.5.9 package in

http://ftp.gva.es/mirror/debian/pool/main/k/kdegraphics/

Works for me.

On uninstalling of kpdf, kghostview was uninstalled as well, but then on install of this debian kpdf, kghostview was not needed, apparently, it prints OK, single page, single side.

I think the same happens to me with 3.5.10 & hardy:

FYI: I can't even select it to print duplex, it claims the driver doesn't support it or something. The printer is capable to print duplex.

1) Printed a two page document, one page/side: duplex
2) Printed a ~20 page document, 4 pages/side: no duplex

But I'd guess this will not be fixed: people are moving to KDE4 (and yes, you have your acroread that works better..) and Okular

Is that the correct way to handle such a bug?
The bug obviously remains in kpdf.
The bug remains in hardy.
Hardy is still supported so I think this bug should be fixed in hardy and in kpdf?
If I should switch to okular, does that mean I also have to install kde4?

I do not think a bug should be fixed by switching to an other software.
Funny that in lauchpad you have to mark such a bug as "fixed" and there is no "won't fix" option which would be a lot more appropriate in this case.

Just discovered this with Hardy too. Duplex is stuck on and the settings ignored, a bit like this bug (2 years!!). I thought Hardy was an LTS, so how come changing to Intrepid is classed as a fix?

Even if you argue that the kde part ist not LTS I believe it is still supported?:

HP4050 Laserjet w/ duplex and network card, attached to local net.
duplex works fine when print jobs sent from windows machines, but KDE 4.x/kubuntu 9.x recognized duplexer, but does not print double-sided.

looking for a solution!
thanks in advance.

This is still affecting me. Hardy 8.04.3 LTS/kpdf/HP 2300.

Always prints documents in duplex along the long axis. Since Hardy is LTS We need to get the fix back ported from Intrepid to Hardy soon.

This has been a bug for far too long.

Does anyone have a solution or work around in Hardy?

This is still a problem, using Kubuntu 9.10 (fully updated) and a HP Laserjet 1320tn.

I tried various Pdf programs (Kpdf, xpdf, adobe reader), but the error persists, i assume they all use lpr.
Before, i used Kubuntu 8.04, there i had this problem only with kpdf. other programs would print normally IIRC.
This issue is really annoying, since I cannot print pdf files normally...
