Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Using MSN with empathy is almost impossible since most of the time it reports "Network error". Please note, that I have no problem with other IM clients using the same user. Also, there can't be major network problem: I am using 1Gbit LAN connection to the ISP's backbone network, also as I've mentioned, no problem with other clients. Also it's a bit misleading to show "edit contact" window, since user can't edit any setting which can solve this problem, I think :) It's up-to-date ubuntu karmic running on 32 bit x86 platform.

Aaaa, PPA, ok thanks. I've tried, the result is same, just as I can see, the UI is a bit redesigned :) But it says the same: "network error". If I open the account settings dialog, I see a red area saying: "Disconnected - Network Error". What is a bit odd, that in settings (advanced) I see:

Server: messenger.hotmail.com
Port: 0

Port 0 sounds a bit odd for me, but it seems it's the default, since I've even tried to re-create the MSN account inside empathy now. And it seems I can't even edit it, well I can (I've tried 1863, afaik it should be the right port number), but after closing the window it says port 0 again. Or is it normal, just some UI glitch? Anyway I've still the same problem even the 2.29.x stuff from the ppa, it seems.

I would try, but how? That's the point I wanted to tell: if I modify the port to 1863, the change on UI seems not to be used at all, "network error" again, and if I reopen the account window I can see that port number is set to zero again. So it seems I can't modify it (well at least I can, but it isn't used or even stored it seems, since zero is displayed again if I reopen the account window or moving to another account and then back to the MSN's).

There is the same issue with Empathy and MSN in Ubuntu 9.10.

This is a major issue, since MSN is one of the largest (I think the largest) IM network, and Empathy is the default client. I think this can be a bad first impression for new Ubuntu users.

Needs to be fixed now, or the default IM client should be changed to another client, like Pidgin.

I found this solution:

http://ubuntu-utah.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8058121&postcount=9

that is,

"ok try this remove telepathy-butterfly an you should just have telepathy-haze installed try connecting with that".

and it just works!

There must be a conflict between the two libraries. I think this can be provided as a fix in Ubuntu updates soon.

I checked it in my (for testing purposes) installation of Ubuntu 10.04
x64, and it worked.

What I did:

1. I "completely removed" telepathy-butterfly from Synaptic

2. restarted Empathy

(you may try to log out/reboot, although I do not think it is necessary)

3. erased the previous MSN account I had created

4. Created a new MSN account (be careful you enter the MSN
login/password correctly)

and it works here (with a non-Hotmail/Microsoft-related email address).

OS: Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

IM Network: MSN

Email address/Login: some_address@some_host.gr - ==> Not Microsoft
related (like Hotmail).

When I saw the message of Linda, I tried to connect to my MSN account,
and it did not connect indeed.

I completely removed telepathy-butterfly, created a new account, and it
works.

The same happens with 9.10 x64, which is my main installation currently.

> could somebody having the bug copy the empathy debug dialog butterfly
> log to the bug?

I reinstalled telepathy-butterfly, Empathy doesn't connect, and I am sending attached the text shown in empathy Debug window regarding empathy and "misson-control" as two files.

> does stopping the running telepathy-butterfly and let empathy reconnect
> workaround the issue?

telepathy-butterfly runs for a very short time before Empathy fails, and
I don't have enough time to find its PID so as to kill it.

Since I am not much experienced with Linux, is there any way to kill it
by its process name?

Ioannis, I had the same issue (Ubuntu 10.04 i386 here). What I did is shut down Empathy, then look for telepathy processes. This shows what I saw:

12370 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-haze

21656 pts/4 S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto telep
25622 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-salut

I then killed those, and restarted Empathy. This solved my problem. To answer your question about killing a process by name, use:

killall telepathy-butterfly

Following happens by me with Ubuntu 10.4 with Empathy 2.30.2:
I've noticed that Empathy shows all the time that it's still trying to connect (I have GT, ICQ and MSN accounts running) to one or more of the accounts. So I opened the accounts manager, where you can also see if the connection via this and that protocol has been established (since I hide my offline contacts this is the only 100% sure way to find out; after all it might happen that noone's online and you'll get a false impression that things are actually working). I looked at ICQ and GT - in both a successful connection has been established. With MSN things looked different. The status icon was blinking [connected <-> disconnected] that is - online status and offline status. It seems that Empathy cannot establish connection and is repeatedly trying to reconnect. No error messages at all.

PS: Guys, killing processes and/or deleting files isn't a normal solution. It might "solve" the problem now but sooner or later it'll come back and might be even worse.

2. Try to connect with empathy.

3. When it fails to connect, remove telepathy-butterfly, quit empathy
