Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I have a Sound Blaster Live! sound card. This is the original Live!. Since I started using Ubuntu in the 7.04 days, I've had the ability to adjust levels for bass and treble. Starting with 9.10, the controls are missing from Sound Preferences. However, they are still availble in alsamixer. I've been accessing them in this way, but would prefer they be in the GUI controls.

In fact, the Sound Preferences applet is so different from previous versions, it doesn't appear to have any controls beyond volume and balance on the output end. In other words all of the volume sliders have been stripped out except for volume and balance.

Just wanted to add that even through alsamixer, Bass and Treble settings do not work. Tone switch must be enabled for bass/treble to be adjustable, and Tone cannot be turned on. So to reiterate:
1) Tone switch, bass, treble and other volume sliders are missing from Sound Preference GUI panel icon.
2) Tone switch cannot be turned on through alsamixer, therefore bass/treble volume sliders for bass/treble do not work in alsamixer.

I would like to see this options in sound preferences too. But you can adjust bass/treble in alsamixer in terminal this way: When I use alsamixer in terminal I have a column named tone. When you move to it with cursor keys a then press M key you can switch it on and then adjust bass/treble. I have SB Audigy (it should be the same as with SB Live). But its very unconfortable to change it in terminal instead of volume control or similar.

Thank you for your bug report. The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

If you want the 'classic' GNOME mixer (the one based on gstreamer), you can either install xfce4-mixer and make a shortcut to that or use the gnome-media and gnome-applets packages from my PPA: ( https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/ppa )

Do not install the canberra or gnome-settings-daemon packages from my PPA unless you want to run without pulseaudio.

I have a similar problem - no treble or audio controls that I can find (including in alsamixer in my case). Alsamixer reports this hardware:

Card: HDA Intel
Chip: Realtek ALC262

I'm not sure if this was ever working in 9.04, but seems like using pulse this should be pretty easy to implement - even on a per application basis if we wanted to go overboard...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GNOME Media is available in both Lucid and Maverick and we are wondering if this is still reproducible in any of those versions, May you please test and give us of feedback about it? Thanks in advance.

Pedro,

I'm running a fully updated Lucid install and the Sound Preferences look exactly the same. There are tabs for Sound Effects, Hardware, Input, Output, and Applications. In none of these sections is there any settings other than volume and balance. If, however, I type in "alsamixer" into a terminal window, I have access to all adjustable settings. I don't know which new version of Gnome Media you are referring to, but I see no difference on my system (in Sound Preferences). Or is this something that is not in the standard repos?

Marking 'Incomplete' because this needs confirmed on Ubuntu Precise/12.04 and later. Also, even if it is confirmed, I doubt the advanced controls will be added back into the sound prefs.
