Just wanted to add that even through alsamixer, Bass and Treble settings do not work. Tone switch must be enabled for bass/treble to be adjustable, and Tone cannot be turned on. So to reiterate:
1) Tone switch, bass, treble and other volume sliders are missing from Sound Preference GUI panel icon.
2) Tone switch cannot be turned on through alsamixer, therefore bass/treble volume sliders for bass/treble do not work in alsamixer.
