If you want the 'classic' GNOME mixer (the one based on gstreamer), you can either install xfce4-mixer and make a shortcut to that or use the gnome-media and gnome-applets packages from my PPA: ( https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/ppa )

Do not install the canberra or gnome-settings-daemon packages from my PPA unless you want to run without pulseaudio.
