I have a similar problem - no treble or audio controls that I can find (including in alsamixer in my case). Alsamixer reports this hardware:

Card: HDA Intel
Chip: Realtek ALC262

I'm not sure if this was ever working in 9.04, but seems like using pulse this should be pretty easy to implement - even on a per application basis if we wanted to go overboard...
