Looks like it doesn't like you calling your user 'staff'; try a different username. Shame about the error message, though.

I reinstalled, this time changing the username to something different
and the install completed.

So I guess the bug is in the fact that you can not have a username
called "staff"

Thanks for the help!

Also happens if username includes spaces and symbols.

It happens because username must match the regular expresion [a-z_][a-z0-9_-]*[$] but It isn't tested when user input the username. Therefore ubiquity fails when try to create the user account.

Incidentally, Jesús, that *is* checked. The code contains:

                        if ! LC_ALL=C expr "$USER" : '[a-z][-a-z0-9]*$' >/dev/null; then

(expr implicitly prepends a ^ to the regex) and in my tests I got an error properly displayed when trying to select a username containing spaces or symbols. So, if you file a bug about this, I'll need specifics.

  * KDE frontend: Ensure that the selected language is visible.
  * KDE frontend: Add a keyboard variant selector.
  * Incorporate user-setup reserved usernames fix (closes: Malone #47861).
  * Catch ENOENT, EIO, ENOTDIR, and EROFS while copying files, try to figure
out what filename they relate to, and display a useful error message
explaining that this is probably a CD or hard disk fault (as
appropriate) and how to deal with this. Closes about a million bugs.
  * Display extended descriptions as well in debconf error dialogs.
