This bug is fixed by updating the v4l drivers (specifically gspca v2.7.0 rather than v2.6.0 as shipped with karmic). It would be great if this could be fixed in a kernel update!

Reuben,

Where is the 2.7.0 source code? I tried searching the web without any luck.

Hi AprilHare

I'm interested to hear if you found the solution for your webcam.
I could do with some help as I've the same problem with my webcam Microsoft VX1000.

Hi AprilHare,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 460118

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy Foshee

I subscribed to this bugreport as I've a Webcam Microsoft VX1000 which
doesn't work I get only a green screen when testing in Cheese or Skype.
I'm quiet new to ubuntu and I don't know where to start solving this
problem.
When researching the problem I read about the kernel as a possible
solution.
May you could give me a advise where to start.
My solution was to buy a logitech 200 webam worked out of the box but I
would like to make the Microsoft VX1000 work too.

I am following other forums on which no one has gotten the VX-1000 camera and microphone to work at the same time. I am running the most current 64-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10. With a little tweaking, my camera now works. I have never gotten the mic to work in Ubuntu, despite much tinkering wiith ALSA and PulseAudio.

I'm using Lucid kernel, 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP
my vx1000 webcam works fine for Video, but no mic.

In preference->sound->input I changed to "LifeCam VX-1000 Analog Mono", but still can't see the mic picking up sound.

Well I have been exploring this problem on a forum thread - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1333343&page=3

Like everyone else, I had no luck with the standard 2.6.32 kernel. When I upgraded it using the kernel-team ppa to 2.6.35-2-generic #3~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP the mic and video started working. But a strange thing was that starting the video stopped the mic working until I removed the gspca_sonixj kernel module and reinstalled it.

In summary:
1. Install kernel 2.6.35-2-generic #3~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP
2. Open Sound Preferences, and select Input tab.
3. Make noise - input level meter goes up and down.
4. Start video app (doesn't matter which) in this case Cheese.
5. Video displayed on screen, but making noise no longer moves input level meter in Sound Preferences.
6. Close down Cheese, and input level meter still not responding.
7. sudo rmmod gspca_sonixj
8. Mic still not responding.
9. sudo modprobe gspca_sonixj
10. Mic works again (until video is used again).

So something has changed between kernels 2.6.32 and 2.6.35 which makes the mic work, but there is something wrong with the gspca_sonixj module that makes it hang when using the video.

I was reluctant to upgrade my kernel because I feared side-effects.

Steps 7 & 9 work for me in 2.6.31 (Karmic.) Actually, my mic used to fail whether or not I opened Cheese.

Kyle just showed me how to produce sound here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...72#post9560972 (post #12.)

Many thanks.

Still, it would be nice if starting the video didn't break the sound, requiring:

sudo rmmod gspca_sonixj
sudo modprobe gspca_sonixj

I think that this problem re-emerged following a standard upgrage of 2.6.31.

I repeated the 20100712 patch, make, make install, sudo rmmod gspca_sonixj. On sudo modprobe gspca_sonixj I got...
FATAL: Error inserting gspca_sonixj (/lib/modules/2.6.31-22-generic/kernel/drivers/media/video/gspca/gspca_sonixj.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg).

dmesg follows. Any advice?
