Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdepim

Many messages in the Spanish translation of kdepim contain %n strings. That's because someone reused some old-format translation. Please, go over the whole KDE translation package for KDE 4.3.1 and make sure there are no %n characters. It should %1, %2, %3.

Hei Ku,

Could you please be more specific on where you are seeing the %n strings?

The kdepim module contains many translation templates:

(Launchpad) https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/kdepim/+translations
(Upstream) http://websvn.kde.org/branches/KDE/4.2/kde-l10n/templates/messages/kdepim/

It would be useful if you could tell us:

* In which of those applications of the kdepim module are you experiencing this bug?
* which language pack version are you using?

The fixes for those strings were committed as part of the solution for bug 406221. Since the language pack containing those fixes has not yet been released to jaunty-updates (it is in jaunty-proposed, though), you might not see them yet. But if the bug is still not fixed, we should identify the offending strings.

You can also try if the bug is fixed in the weekly language pack PPAs here -> https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-langpack/+archive/ppa. You'll find more information on them here -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/TranslationLifecycle#Automatically-built%20weekly%20packages

I'm running KDE 4.3.1 from these PPAs, so I'm aware this may not affect 4.2 (although these errors were there last time I tried a vanilla installation)

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/staging/ubuntu jaunty main

My concern is that these errors show up again in Karmic. They were fixed after the release of 4.3.0, but they are here again.

Thanks for the additional info. Could you also please tell us which language pack version are you using, as requested on comment 2?

The relevant packages are:

  language-pack-kde-es
  language-pack-kde-es-base

Once we've got the version, we can check the source packages in order to identify the problem. You can even check them yourself, with something along the lines of:

  apt-get source language-pack-kde-es-base
  cd language-pack-kde-es-base-<yourversion>
  grep -iR "msgstr\[1\] \"%n" data/
  (and the same for language-pack-kde-es)

Having had a look at the Karmic translations in Launchpad, there no longer seem to be %n strings, so everything seems correct there:

Hi Hei Ku,

Thanks for the info.

I see you are using the 1:9.04+20090413 language pack. All the "%n bugs" seem to have been solved in the new language pack which has been tested by the Spanish translators and copied to jaunty-updates today.

Please wait for a few hours for the update, install the new language pack and report back (you'll probably have to log out and back in again after installing it for the changes to take effect).

You should see it here once it gets to the archive -> http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty-updates/language-pack-kde-es (after it gets there, you might still have to wait a bit until it's propagated to the mirrors and you can install it).

Hei Ku,

Did you have the chance to test the language packs? If so, could you report if they solved the issue for you? Thanks in advance.

David, the last time I was using Kubuntu, the strings were fine. Unfortunately, there were several other problems and I finally switched distros about a month ago.

Thanks for your feedback. As per your comment, I'm marking this bug as Fix Released.

If the other problems you are mentioning were related to translations, I'd be interested to hear them, so that we can work towards improving the distro.

Thanks!

Not particularly. I hope some internal project can help Kubuntu get on the right track, but for now it just wasn't cutting it for me.

Related to translations, I can tell you that last time I looked in Rosetta there were many suggested strings that weren't approved and would have helped a great deal with the translation problems. Not breaking them in the first place would be better, but approving the suggestion is a good alternative too.

Thanks again for your feedback.

If you ever come back to Kubuntu and experience such translation issues, you'd like to provide suggestions and those to be reviewed, I'd encourage you to contact the Ubuntu Spanish translators [1], which are one of the most active translation teams in Ubuntu.

Otherwise, for general translation issues or questions, you can also contact the global translations team in any of the communication channels available [2]
