hplip-3.9.8.run install does not support Parallel Port for LaserJet 4Plus

While running hplip-3.9.8.run for HP LaserJet 4 Plus on Linux UBUNTU - it brought up the HP Device Manager - Printer setup wizard. However, Parallel port option was grey'ed out and would not allow me to select it.

I was installing hplip-3.9.8.run to fix the problem: "W2 invalid pers" displayed on Printer while printing

Any help much appreciated

Thank you very much for your help, python command worked, I am one step closer.
I was able to select the Parallel port on the first screen of GUI, but on the next screen -
Select from Discovered Devices - nothing, just empty screen.

Because of the Parallel port I selected "r=restart" which rested my machine. Once it came back,
I ran:

Does this printer also have USB or do you have access to a JetDirect? Either
of these would be a better solution than using parallel.

This is pretty old printer - but it is a great, great workhorse. However, it does not have USB and mine does not have a Network card.

I went through the entire doc and followed it through, still same error:

I also noticed this: When I go to:
        - Applications
                  Accessories
                          HP Device Manager
     And click on it - it brings me HP Device Manager. There is a Printer icon there (left side) and it has "red x" on the top of the icon. When I click on HP-Device Manager - Display Information - it displays this:
        Unable to open device
                             hp:/par/HP_LaserJet_4_Plus?device=/dev/parport0

In regard to the "Applications>Accessories>HP Device Manager" and the note about a red X on the printer icon, this is actually a permissions problem. If you check, /dev/parport0 will have root only permission. Run sudo chown -R :(your user name here without the parens) /dev/parport0 and the problem will go away. The chown suggested will give "user" access to /dev/parport0.

Since you have already gone through the troubleshooting of parallel port, I would still like you to have a quick check in case you overlooked some step.

In your BIOS check if the parallel port is configured for ECP mode. To access the BIOS and configuration, please refer your motherboard or vendor's manuals.

Also check if the user part of the lp group? Run "groups" in a terminal window and verifiy the user is a part of the lp group. If not, consult your Linux distro documentation on how to add the user to the lp group. In most distros you can run (as root): "usermod -g lp yourusername"
