Since you have already gone through the troubleshooting of parallel port, I would still like you to have a quick check in case you overlooked some step.

In your BIOS check if the parallel port is configured for ECP mode. To access the BIOS and configuration, please refer your motherboard or vendor's manuals.

Also check if the user part of the lp group? Run "groups" in a terminal window and verifiy the user is a part of the lp group. If not, consult your Linux distro documentation on how to add the user to the lp group. In most distros you can run (as root): "usermod -g lp yourusername"
