Bug Description

I have tried 9.10 Alpha 3 on a pc with an Intel Integrated Graphics Controller 82865G. The max resolution I can get i 800x600.
Using Ubuntu 9.04 on the same machine I get a resolution of 1152x864.
15/8 2009. Today I have tried 9.10 Alpha 4. Same problem..
4/9 2009. Today I have tried 9.10 Alpha 5. Same problem...

I have also tried 9.10 Alpha 5 on another pc with Intel 82865G Graphics Controller. Same problem:
Max resolution running 9.10 Alpha 5 is 800X600.
Running Ubuntu 9.04 the resolution is 1152x864

Hi nymark1,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

What you wrote in comment #6 is not Xorg.0.log. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is a log file, and we would like it attached to this bug report. The easiest way to attach it and also some other useful information is to run the command `apport-collect 408588`.

the monitor is detected as "Unknown".. it is a bit of a no brand being a AOC 17" LCD lm726 (http://www.compucon.com.au/lcd/AOC726.htm).. I cannot remember now what it was detected as before but I will note this when hopefully it returns

If I plug in my 19" MAGvision LXL-940DM and restart the box It is detected fine and displays a nice res of 1280x1024 but it is detected as a "XXE 17"" in the Display applet.. strange it thinks its a 17 inch monitor.

Plugging the original monitor (lm726) back in and it stays the right resolution until a reboot.

here is hoping this problem is resolved

the patches on the 30th fixed my problems. monitor detected fine as AOC 17"

startup detection of monitor perhaps? the card was working fine including compiz running fine and no other performance problems while at 800x600 so it was just simple the monitor resolution detection

cheers

Interesting.
Running Ubuntu 9.10 my monitor is also detected as "Unknown". Here I get a max res. of 800x600.
But running Ubuntu 9.04 my monitor is also detected as "Unknown" . Here I get a max res. of 1152x864.

Where did you find the patches you mentioned?

And by the way: Great that someone responded. :-)

Tested 9.10 beta. Sadly I ended up with the same problem...
Just for fun I installed 8.04 on my pc just to see what that would do
And would you believe it: That gave me an even higher resolution than the one I get running 9.04.
This has made me think...The newer version of Ubuntu I install on my pc, the lower the screen resolution gets.
This seems to me to be the opposite of development.
So what is this really all about?
Is my hardware simply to old for Ubuntu to keep caring about it?
Maybe I am being unfair, but since I am getting no answers anywhere, I can only guess....

Okay, the problem can be solved by reverting to an older version of the Intel driver. (The Intrepid version)

I followed the guide in this link :

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance

This gave me a decent screen resolution of 1152x864.

I've found a workaround. Disabling Kernel Mode Setting (editing menu.lst and adding "nomodesetting" to the kernel line) allows to use all resolutions. Looks that the problem is with KMS.

Thanks for the tip Leonardo Torok. I just tried it and it worked for me too. Except the parameter is "nomodeset". If anyone tried it and it doesn't work, you may need to add the correct modelines to xorg.conf.

I think I'm having the same problem: I thought it was my monitor, but now I think I'm discovering it's not having the proper drivers for the Intel 82865G graphics controller. I'm a n00b, so I don't understand where exactly to throw the "nomodeset" line, if that is the solution.

Okay...I found a solution, but not a fix: if I leave the monitor off during boot and turn it on later, then I get the correct monitor information and can use the higher resolutions. Somewhere there is a conflict with the graphics controller and the EDID of the monitor...whether it's a software or hardware bug is beyond me, although I recently installed XP on that system (for someone else who doesn't stand a chance with Ubuntu), and don't have any problems...so I must assume that it is an Ubuntu software driver bug.

First I waited until the login drum sound before turnig on the tv, there was a breif popup saying 16:9 but I don't know if it was the tv or ubuntu. When I logged in it was still in 800x600, display properties 800x600, 640x480.

Second I logged in with the tv still turned off and didn't turn it on until after the ubuntu start/desktop sound. Same 16:9 popup for a moment but still only 800x600 and 640x480 to choose from in display properties.

Going back to 8.04 LTS tomorrow and if you like I can, for comparison, post lspci, dmesg and XorgOlog for 8.04 too?

To summarize this bug up, I think there is a problem in the coding that allows these intel graphics controllers to read the EDID information from the monitors...I do not know if code needs to be written for each EDID, or how the EDID is designed, but the conflict and solution would seem to lie with the EDID to X programming structure and interface with the video controllers. (trashanken, I suppose the before/after outputs might be useful to the developers...that is if 8.04 LTS is working with your TV today.)

I am having a similar problem with the released version of 9.10 (fully patched to date).

I am running a Panasonic CF-W4 notebook, it has Intel 915GM chipset.

The internal display is 1024x768 and it works (though I do get funny blits of garbage now and then--this did not happen in 9.04).

I have an external Acer display that is 1440x900, but it won't work beyond 1052x864. This monitor used to work great as 1440x900 under 9.04.

We're not planning to do further development work for i865 chips for 9.04, 9.10, or lucid 10.04. The i865 support in the -intel driver has proven to be too fragile for us to effectively maintain in a patched form without causing regressions. For this reason, we would not be able to backport fixes. If you are still finding trouble with this chipset on lucid I would suggest pursuing technical support through channels such as http://askubuntu.com.
