Hi Mattias Villani

 Thanks for your report, as you reported this bug a while ago we need your help with this tests, so we can work on this issue.

1. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

2. If the issue remains with Karmic, it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine it. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds

3. Finally, if you can take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume and provide answers to the questions mentioned under the "Information Gathering" section that would be great.

Thank you so much, and sorry for the late reply.

Dear Andres,

Thanks for following up on this one.
My HP2530p is now a production machine, so I am afraid to brake it with an
alpha release. I tried the koala as you suggested, but only as a live
session user. It behaved exactly as in jaunty: goes nicely into suspend, but
I get a black screen when I try to wake it up.
I will do a full install of koala when it goes into beta, and then report
back to you.
I may also be able to get a clean machine from my employer to install the
alpha 4.
Let me get back to you.
Thanks a lot for all the good work with ubuntu!
I am fighting for freedom every day in an otherwise dark windoze environment
.

Dear Andres,

I downloaded the .deb package of the most recent mainline kernel. I
installed it and everything looked fine. After reboot I got to the Ubuntu
splash screen, but rather quickly I got a black screen and the boot halted.
I will try to get another laptop (same model) from my employer and install
the most recent alpha version of Koala. But I will not be in office until
friday.

Dear Daniel,

I am now using Karmic. Hibernate works, but is slow to go to sleep (>30 sec)
and slow to wake up (>30 sec). This is with the programs Matlab, LyX and
Firefox open.
Suspend shuts down fast when there are programs open, but takes forever to
wake up (more than a couple of minutes, but possibly much longer). When
programs are open, suspend takes longer to shut down, and seems to shut down
twice in a row, that is first all indicator lamps dim out and the computer
seems to be asleep, but then the indicator lamps gets turned on again for a
few seconds and then everything finally shuts down again. Also here does it
take forever to wake up.

Note that that I have an Intel SSD 80GB disc, and that I have disabled the
Bios option: 'Fan always on when on AC power', which was well known to be
crucial in Intrepid for booting the system.

I also note that with the Intel SSD boot times are very fast, so shutting
down totally and then re-booting is manageable. But a function Suspend would
of course be helpful.

Please let me know if I should send you some logs of my system.

Thanks for a great Ubuntu experience!

I have the same problem with Fedora 12 (updated, kernel 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.i686.PAE) on the hp compaq elitebook 2530p.

It seems to be working better after adding the parameter "nomodeset" at the end of the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf.

It also seems to have solved some small graphic issues at the same time...

Still not working in Lucid Lynx either. "nomodeset" does not help.

Hello all,

I just upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04, and my suspend issues have gotten worse. Previously, one out of every ~ 5 suspends would fail. Currently, they all fail. I will try the suggestion from comment #9 to see if it works..

I'm not really sure how to further debug the problem, though. Hibernate works like a dream with my SSD.

To update, adding 'nomodeset' does indeed allow for successful suspend, though not resume. Previously, the suspend would put the laptop into suspend, while triggering the 'charging' light x 3. Then the system would reboot.

It appears it is indeed tied into the display.

I believe I have solved the problem.

In /etc/default/grub, change the line below to add "acpi_osi=Linux" as so:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux"

Suspend now works magnificently!

To further update on this issue, after a few days of easy suspending, the issue seems to be back despite no changes to my configuration and no updates. I'm stumped as to how to proceed now..

Further news. I now have suspend working again - and reliably for now - by adding the following line:

    HAL_PROP_POWER_MANAGEMENT_QUIRK_S3_BIOS=true

to
   /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux

as per Bug #431810

I'm trying to figure out how to properly add a quirk line into HAL. It seems that it should go in here:

/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk-pm-hp.fdi

I think these are the lines to add (will test now):

      <match key="system.hardware.product" contains="2530p">
        <merge key="power_management.quirk.s3_bios" type="bool">true</merge>
      </match>

I have attached a patch. How do I get this bug also crosslinked into HAL??
