Bug Description

Hi, I've noticed that rotation by ALT + ] doesn't work properly in Inkscape 0.46. I use a pc with Italian keybord that runs Windows Xp Pro. I've tried also on another Pc that runs Vista. I've also tried to use ALT + ALTGR + ] but doens't work. It seems to me a bug. Other functionality, that use ALT key, works properly (like spacing and kerning, see the attachment). I've also tried to modify inkscape.xml file, but I can't file the related action for rotation.

The rotation with ] or Alt+] only works with selected nodes.

I can confirm this using Inkscape 0.46+devel r21525 on OS X 10.5.7 with XQuartz 2.3.3.2
MacBook Pro with Swiss German keyboard layout.

I can reconfigure the Option/Alt key with xmodmap (keymapping utility for the X11 window manager), but this works only for Alt + click (select under) and Alt + cursor (manual kerning) keyboard shortcuts.

[, ] can only be typed using Option + 5, Option + 6 (when entering text) and cannot be used for the 'rotate' command Alt + ] (whether I remap Option to Alt_L or not), nor can that command be remapped to other keys (as of current SVN).

This is a known issue with non-qwerty keyboards, but I can't find the relevant bug # at the moment.

Confirmed on Windows XP, 0.46 and rev. 21526.
Alt+[ act as if I used Path>Inset, which should be binded to Ctrl+(...
Same problem with Alt+] and Path>Outset.
Note that I also have to use Altgr key to get [ and ] (French keyboard).

@JazzyNico - sure about the 'text' tag? I have the same issues for other /keyboard shortcut commands like

- show hide grid [#] (Option+'3')
- show/hide guides [|] (Option'7')
- …?

related:
- zoom previous/next ['`', Shift+'`']('`' is Shift+'^')
- manual kerning [Alt+'<', Alt+Shift+'<', Alt+'>', Alt+Shift+'>'] ('>' is Shift+'<')
- …?

OTOH these work fine with 'de_CH':
- toggle snap [%] (Shift+'5')
- invert selection [!] (Shift+'¨')

I think its a broader usability issue how to handle keyboard shortcut commands with different keyboard layouts/modifier keys (languages, laptops without numeric keypads (?, those KP_* shortcuts) etc.).
-> tags + 'ui'?

Why can't we delete comments? ;-)

on second thought - those other commands can be redefined in
key/default.xml, i.e. inkscape could ship with different keymap files
for languages / keyboard layouts. Only problem left are those commands
who currently cannot be remapped and how to figure how many of them
there are. Maybe 'Transforming by keys - (pixel-size) move, scale,
rotate' are the only one?

Setting importance to medium, because this is the only way to rotate text with 0.47.
0.48 will allow users to change characters rotation, kerning, vertical position... and thus reduce this report importance to low.

It seems like you are encountering an issue with the rotation functionality in Inkscape on your Windows XP Pro and Vista machines with an Italian keyboard layout. Given that Inkscape has likely received updates since version 0.46, it's possible that this issue has been addressed in later releases.

Here are a few suggestions to help you troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Update Inkscape:
Ensure that you are using the latest version of Inkscape. Visit the official Inkscape website (https://inkscape.org/) and download the most recent version. Newer versions often come with bug fixes and improvements.

Check Keyboard Layout:
Confirm that your keyboard layout settings are correct. Sometimes, certain key combinations may behave differently depending on the keyboard layout. Make sure your keyboard layout is set to Italian.

Key Binding Configuration:
Inkscape allows users to customize key bindings. You might want to check the key binding configuration in Inkscape to ensure that the rotation shortcut is correctly assigned. Open the Inkscape preferences and look for keyboard shortcuts or key bindings.

Bug Reporting:
If the issue persists, and you believe it is a bug, consider reporting it to the Inkscape development team. You can file a bug report on their bug tracker (https://inkscape.org/report). Provide detailed information about the issue, including your operating system, Inkscape version, and steps to reproduce the problem.

Alternative Shortcut:
While investigating the issue, you can try using the "Object" menu in Inkscape. Select the object you want to rotate, go to "Object" in the menu bar, hover over "Transform," and then choose "Rotate." This provides an alternative way to perform rotations.

Remember that my information is up to date as of January 2022, and there may have been further developments or updates since then. Always refer to the latest Inkscape documentation and resources for the most accurate information. Answer Source https://mytechsimply.com/
