Bug Description

Hardware:
Econel 230R S1 with Serverworks HT2100 plus HT1000
2x AMD Opteron 2344 HE, 2x Quad-Core
16 GB DDR2-RAM ECC
3x 500 GB SAS-Festplatten
Hardware RAID5

kipmi0 uses permanently 100% on a cpu.

Exact the same hardware exept:
2x AMD Opteron 2372 HE, 2x Quad-Core
8 GB DDR2 ECC Registered
2x 500GB SATA
HW RAID1

But operating system is Debian 4.

This is somehow related to the iRMC / ServerView because it broke up at the same time when the problem occured.
Normal hardware reset won't fix this but when the server is unplugged from PSU for a moment it'll fix this for 1-5 days (for me). Then kipmi0 process start using 100% CPU (one of 8 core) again.

It's not clear from this report which version of the kernel you are using. Please make sure you've tested against the latest 2.6.28 based Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 kernel - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

If the issue remains with this most recent kernel, please run the following from a terminal to automatically gather and attach debug info (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies):

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 291629

I'm also closing the upstream Debian bug watch for now as there doesn't seem to be a specific Debian bug to link this report to. Thanks.

The same problem happens to me, but not all the time. The machine can run for days without kipmi0 even showing up in top. But once it starts using 100% of CPU, it's there until reboot.

I've blacklisted ipmi_si in /etc/modprobe.d and never seen this again. However, it happened infrequently, so I can't be sure it really helped.

uname -r: 2.6.27-11-server (same with older versions)
CPU: 2x Xeon Dual Core

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please then run following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 291629

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Just today I saw this bug again on kernel 2.6.27-11-server (forgot to blacklist ipmi_si). I can't test development version on my box since it's a production server. My other machines don't show it, probably it's related to a specific hardware.

Just to let you know this is not unique to ubuntu or debian. I see what appears to be the same one in Suse 10.1 (kernel 2.6.16.54-0.2.5-smp). It is running on a SunFire server with 2x AMD Opteron 848 CPUs. This is a no longer maintained kernel, it may of course have been fixed in newer kernel versions.
