Suspend doesn't work

Bug Description

In Ubuntu 8.04, when I click "Suspend" the screen turns black and the fan speed decreases alright. However, when I try to resume, Ubuntu starts desperately writing to the hard drive as if hibernating, and then crashes (the HDD led keeps glowing, though). No response to the keyboard or mouse, no signal from the videocard. Hard reboot is the only thing left to do.

Please inform me if any more information is needed.

Thank you,

Nicholas

Hi Nicholas

This is most likely an issue with proprietary graphics drivers, which are notorious for causing problems with suspend. Can you post what make of graphics card you have, and the driver that is controlling it?

Thomas -

Thank you for the question. I use a GeForce 6600 videocard with the
proprietary driver installed through Hardware Drivers (I did not use Envy).

Please tell me if there is anything else you would like to know.

Hi Nicholas

That's almost certainly the cause.

The best thing to try (although not guaranteed to work, sadly), is a workaround explained here:
http://ubuntulinuxtipstricks.blogspot.com/2008/03/ati-nvidia-resume-good-news-bad-news.html

I hope this helps you!

I've converted this to a support question. The bug is indeed a bug, but it's one that is already well known, and reported elsewhere (unless you can demonstrate that it's not due to the graphics drivers).

The workaround does not work for me under the latest kernel (2.6.24-19), therefore I converted this back to a bug report. Please tell me if any information is needed.

Can you disable the proprietary driver in hardware drivers, then restart, and test whether the problem still occurs?

Nicholas (drkoljan) wrote :

The problem still occurs after disabling the driver and rebooting. The same happens with Hibernate. However, Hibernate worked with one of the previous kernels (2.6.24-17 I think) - incorrectly (see LP 236784), but still didn't crash the computer. Now I wonder whether I should file another bug report or edit this one.

Let's file against the kernel, if you think it worked with different kernels, and set it back to new.

It may have been already reported, in which case someone will hopefully set this as a duplicate.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Is this still an issue with the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release?

LiveCD - same as described for 8.04
Newly installed - same
All updates installed, 2.6.27-7 - same
All updates installed, 2.6.27-11 - a bit different: upon pressing the power
button to resume, the fans start rotating but stop almost immediately. Half
a second later this starts again, but it reboots instead of resuming.

Maybe it's just my computer, but I've had no problems with other operating
systems. Please inform me if there is anything else I can do.

Thanks.

Hi Nicholas,

Can you do one more round of testing and just confirm this issue remains in the latest pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 (currently Alpha 4). http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel. Again, you should be able to test suspend via a LiveCD. Thanks in advance.

Hi Leann,
Unfortunately it's still the same - HDD led glowing and nothing happening.

If there are any further questions, I'm happy to help.

Hi Nicholas,

Can you attach the output of "sudo lspci -vnvn > lspci-vnvn".

Sure. The file was made under 9.04 Alpha 4 LiveCD, if that makes any difference.

Hi Nicholas,

Sorry for the delay, could you also take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume and provide any additional information asked/outlined there. Also, the final Jaunty 9.04 release should now be available if you wanted to test - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . Thanks.

Unfortunately, Suspend is still the same with 9.04 (64-bit).

The pm-suspend thing yielded no result: the screen simply goes black upon
entering the command.

Hibernate isn't okay either: sometimes it works (not the way it's meant,
though: just locking the desktop), sometimes the screen goes black for a
second and then returns to the desktop with no error messages, sometimes it
crashes to non-responding CLI.

I'm a bit confused over what I should do next.

Just want to try and keep this report up to date. Care to test and confirm this remains with the latest Karmic 9.10 release? ISO CD images can be found at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . Thanks.

I tried the karmic 64 iso and got the following behavior:

Boot from CD
Close lid -> suspends fine
Open lid -> black screen

Boot from CD
Set a password for ubuntu user
Add new user
Switch to new user
Switch back to ubuntu user
Close lid -> suspends fine
Open lid -> resumes fine
Switch back to new user -> black screen

@rsay, it would be better if you opened a separate bug as you appear to have different hardware than the original bug reporter. Even though you may be experiencing the same symptoms, it's likely a different issue that will require a different fix. Thanks.
