Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic

Subject: linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic: Hangs during boot on Athlon64
Package: linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic
Version: 2.6.24-15.27
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Normal boot hangs with the linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic (version
2.6.24-15.27) kernel.

Specifically, the "Ubuntu bar" stops around 20%, forever. I expected
it to go on. :-)

When booting in the corresponding 'recovery' mode then I get more
information: the result of 'dmesg' after such a failed boot is attached.

NOTE: This is reported as a kernel bug because booting the exact same
system with the original kernel that came with the ISO,
linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic (version 2.6.24-12.22), works fine.

Ubuntu version: Hardy Heron (8.04) beta upgraded as of today, April
10, 2008.

I also got a freeze at about the same time during booting, but there was no 'oops'. The last message before the long pause is always this:
[ 29.171031] iTCO_wdt: Found a ICH8M device (Version=2, TCOBASE=0x1060)
[ 29.171121] iTCO_wdt: initialized. heartbeat=30 (nowayout=0)

See also bug 215038. Looks like the message before the freeze can vary. The -15 kernel still works.

Hi Kristoffer,

This is a known issue and we actively have developers working to get you a fix asap. Sorry for the troubles. The kernel oops you're seeing is already reported in bug 212100. bug 212271 also sees similar issues. The oops is originally a result of a fix for bug 202065 and bug 201431. A fix was temporarily commited (see bug 212960) but this resulted in machines locking up at boot :( So the patch was reverted: https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 . I'm going to go ahead and mark this as duplicate of bug 212100. We'll be sure to keep you posted with the current progress there. Again, sorry for the breakage and thanks for your patience.
