Bug Description

[ Impact ]

Indicators using (big) pixmap icons cause the shell to use a lot of CPU computation, which interfere with user experience

[ Test case ]

- Install mega client from https://mega.nz/sync
- Run it in ubuntu and ensure it doesn't block the UI while syncing
(but even opening/closing the app should be enough to trigger

Alternatively use this test tool:
 https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/blob/master/indicator-test-tool/testTool.js

Launch it with `gjs` and select the 'Crazy icons updates' menu item:
 - The shell should not hang

[ Regression potential ]

Icon updates may be late or not apply immediately (or at all).

In general there has been a refactor of the iconCache, so internally it may happen that we load an icon more times, or that there could be an increase in RAM usage as per missing garbage collecting of it.

----

I had similar issues when 20.04 was released, then it disappeared with an upgrade - but sadly it's back. I have short intermittent freezings of the OS. About every 15-30 seconds Ubunut freezes for a second or two. Eg when writing this description, the OS freezes every second word. When the freeze goes away the OS is snappy. I have tried switching between Wayland and Xorg - but the problem persists. If I write something when it freezes up the last chhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhharacter will be replicated many times - like what happened jusssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssst now. This problem did not show up in ubuntu 18.04 through 19.10. Hope U can fix this soon - using my laptop in unbearable.

Please:

1. Run the 'Extensions' app and check you don't have any non-Ubuntu extensions enabled. If you do then please turn them off.

2. Immediately after the next freeze please run:

   journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and then attach the resulting file here.

3. Also leave 'top' running in a Terminal window and tell us if any process is using high CPU, particularly around the time of a freeze.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
Changed in gnome-shell (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Hello Daniel!

I had one extension active (User Theme) for getting the dark theme truly
dark everywhere.
I checked top and it is gnome + shell that push the cpu up to over 80% -
but only in short
bursts.
I made two journal files just in case - I'll attach them.

Thank you so much for your help!
If there is anything more I can do to help out, please let me know

Kind regards

The journal.txt and top made me think about Gnome being the source of the
freezing.
I installed Mate and changed DE and have no freeze at all - I guess that
proves it has
something to do with GNOME.

Please open the Extensions app and disable 'Ubuntu AppIndicators'. Does that fix it?

Yes!
All the lag and freeze are gone.
I never thought that the applets cloud cause this issue.
I'll try them one at the time - are you interested in which applet it is
causing all this?

It was the mega.nz applet that was the culprit.
I uninstalled the applet and now my gnome works just fine.

Thank you very much for the support!
When my salary comes the 27th I'll donate to canonical - this is
better support than both Apple and Microsoft.

I didn’t check that. I just enabled and disabled installed applets and when I disabled mega applet the freeze disappeared

Hello
I'd like to help out - that's how U do it in open source!
But Im not that technical - can you tell me how to investigate what the
problem might be because I don't know how to do it without instructions.

Im not a noob but nor a programmer - somewhere in between - so I can
do things in CLI if that is necessary.

Kind regards!

2. Can you reproduce the same bug with any indicator other than mega.nz ?

I tried a number of extensions without replicating the issue. Then I
downloaded the mega.nz extension
and the nautilus integration and ran them. Then my computer got wonky right
away and freezing every
5 seconds.
So I recorded the output from cli and attach it. The firewall alert seems
to be my phone being interested
in my laptop.

Hope this helps

Hello Jofen, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell-extension-appindicator into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/33.1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.
