Bug Description

Xubuntu 19.10 (daily) QA-testing

On booting today's daily ISO on systems, 4 of 8 systems tested did not have functioning key bindings on boot. The result is pressing <PrtScr>, <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<T>, <Super>+<E> etc would do nothing.

This report is made on first of the systems that had this issue :-

dell [optiplex] 780 (c2q-q9400, 8gb, amd/ati cedar radeon hd 5000/6000/7350/8350)
dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400 pro/xt)
lenovo thinkpad x201 (i5, 4gb, i915)
hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)
dell vostro 430 (i7-870, 8gb, nvidia geforce gt 6600 gt)

Two of these systems have two displays (share screens so same setup) which have issues with trying to adjust right display to portrait(left) or on clicking 'apply' nothing occurs but apply box remains 'grey' - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-settings/+bug/1821652

In that bug Theo's suggested `XFSETTINGSD_DEBUG=1 xfsettingsd --replace --no-daemon`, where I noticed the `xfsettingsd --replace --no-daemon` on each listed system here caused the CTRL+ALT+T and other keybaord bindings to work (plus fix screen issue in other bug report).

Strangely, I rebooted the x201 (thinkpad) and it didn't have this issue on reboot, a third boot and it was there again

<Unit193> Huh, I don't see anything in .xsession-errors that'd account for that.

19.10 QA-Test on lenovo thinkpad sl510 (c2d-t6570, 2gb ram, i915)

I noted appearance settings changes weren't having any impact; so in exploring what was happening I hit ctrl+alt+T and noted this wasn't working either. My appearance, plus CTRL+ALT+T were fixed with a `xfsettingsd --replace` command, so this bug is possibly related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-settings/+bug/1785143.

dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
opened `thunar` to mount hdd to have music play in background... i mounted my data ($HOME) directory on hdd and icons were unexpectedly different? i opened 'appearance' and couldn't see a change there (greybird & elementary.xfce.dark as expected)?
opened window top left (whisker) and noted firefox, terminal menu items did NOT have icons!
I pressed <prtscr> if someone on #xubuntu-devel wanted to see what I was [badly] describing & noted it didn't work, ctrl+alt+T to open term did nothing too so https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-settings/+bug/1827459
On running `xfsettingsd --replace` ctrl+alt+T works, whisker menu now has icons, plus on reload (^R) my `thunar` directory now has icons that I expect.

usual validate media, boot and main menu doesn't have all icons (none for web browser, terminal emulator or help), ctrl+alt+T doesn't work..

`xfsettingsd --replace` and flash, panel changes color & now my icons on desktop have icons, menu items have icons, ctrl+alt+T all work.

another box where this issue occurred.

I also had strange white/black box pattern on boot that was rather unpleasant, strobe-like effect on mouse movement but it soon settled down. I did `dmesg |grep squash` & no squashfs errs were present (media check prior test anyway)

xfsettingsd --replace would restore CTRL+ALT+T to working, along with icons on desktop, and icons on menu..

on boot desktop icons were shadow like, opened menu also has no icons for all.applications, accessories, internet, office, settings & ctrl+alt+T doesn't work..
A terminal opened and `xfsettingsd --replace &` command restored mentioned issues, with CTRL+ALT+T now working.

this issue occurred, top panel wasn't expected color, menu items were lacking icons (just greyish-display).. `xfsettingsd --replace &` fixed this as usual. ctrl+alt+T then worked.

this issue is inconsistent.

I've booted today's focal daily on
- lenovo thinkpad x201 (i5, 4gb, i915)

and had it NOT OCCUR

then on a subsequent boot

I'm without icon pictures (look like shadows) on the desktop (for mounted drives) & menu items are square boxes & CTRL+ALT+T doesn't work.

`xfsettingsd --replace` will fix it (as always)

@Sai/saivinob; you didn't say which daily image you tried.. hirsute or focal.. (doesn't matter now, but try and remember to note it in report, but thanks for testing & reporting!)
