sendfax output illegible

Bug Description

HPLIP 2.7.10 (and all earlier versions that I've tried)
Fedora 8 (and all earlier fedora releases that I've tried)
If I scan a fax like this:
hp-scan -d "hpaio:/net/Officejet_7200_series?ip=192.168.1.100" -n -o /tmp/scan.$USER.jpg
and then try to fax that file using hp-sendfax, the resulting fax is illegible.

Can you run hp-check -t and post the output?

Also is it possible for you scan the output and post it?

Thanks for the info.

I can't scan the output... it was sent across the country. I can try to reproduce the problem by faxing something from home to work on Monday.

If you scan with xsane instead do you still have the problem? hp-scan
is still kind of experimental, so I wouldn't be too surprised if it
was the culprit here.

I don't think the scan side is the problem... I saved a pdf file from open office and tried to fax is with sendfax and had similar problems with 2.7.8. But I'll try what you suggest anyhow. The problem is that it's hard for me to tell if a fax works because I only have one phone line/fax machine. The scans look fine before I fax them though.

OK, well, let's start at the beginning, could you please post the
output of "hp-check -t"?

I already attached the output of hp-check -t (see http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10679257/hp-check.log).

OK... I sent a fax to my company's fax machine. As it turns out, the single page scan turned into a 12 page fax with everything magnified. The same file converted to a pdf file faxed as a single almost blank page with just a little 3mm by 9mm block at the top of the page. I'll attach three files that I tried to fax. None of them looked right.

This file is the same as the scanned jpg file except converted to pdf using "convert testscan.jpg testscan.pdf". It looks fine with a pdf view but fails to fax properly. The failure has a different signature from the jpg problem ... the pdf faxes as one nearly blank page.

This is a small pdf file I created with open office. It fails to fax... I can see only the very top of the "T" and "F" of "Test Fax" on the first line.

Here are my testing results:

scanned file jpg: failed imaging stretched
scanned file pdf: failed magnification problem
small pdf test fax: passed with no problems.

I'll speak with Don about this soon as he's available.

Printing the 'scanned file pdf' to the printer causes the same output as faxing. The pdf is split into many magnified parts.

Still testing.

Okay I think I have a workaround. This has to do with how the image is being rendered--although I'll need to test it more.

I opened the 'scanned file jpg' with a gnome application called image viewer--It's the default application for viewing images in gnome. I then 'printed' the file to the printer fax queue. Opened hp-toolbox (or hp-sendfax) the file will pop into the fax you can then select the person to fax to and fax and it should work.

Steps:
Open file using a different application
Click that applications Print feature.
Print the file to the printer fax queue. IE select OfficeJet_7200_fax
Open hp-toolbox, click fax. (or run hp-sendfax)
The file should pop into the add file to fax queue.
Select recipient.
Click fax.

Fax should be sent correctly.

This work for you David?

Okay David,

If you open hp-toolbox, click printer setttings, at the printer name (on the very top) select the fax queue, make sure fit to page is enabled this should resolve your problem.

I was able to send both the jpg and the pdf and a 2 page pdf generated using "convert foo.jpg foo.jpg foo.pdf" once I changed the "fit to page" to yes.

I am still unable to send the small pdf test fax. I get the error in the attached file.

Usually the error you saw means that the other fax machine wasn't able to receive or canceled the fax job.

Possible to re-test? I'd be surprised if this still failed.

It seems reproducible... that small pdf test fax fails before transferring the whole page (all I see is the top of the T and F on the first line). I've sent other faxes to the same machine between attempts and they worked. The small pdf test fax has failed 4 times today.

David (idht4n) wrote :

I tried to send the small pdf test fax 4 more times, twice by itself, once as the second page of a two page fax and once as the first page of a three page fax. Interestingly, it never worked when it was faxed alone (0 for 6), but it worked both times that it was faxed with other pages.

Hmm odd..I know this doesn't help but I was able to fax it without any problems...

I'm not sure what would cause this even still...I'll check with Don when he gets in for any suggestions he may have.

Sorry I couldn't help more..

The fit to page option solved one of the problems I was having.
It seems to me like this option should be the default for faxing.

But I'm still unable to fax the small test pdf file by itself.
I always get a communication error. Is there a fax modem
maintained by HP that I can use for fax testing?
