Bug Description

The current Inkscape icon is currently only provided in
one size and do not blend in with other application
icons in my menu. Here is a new icon!
Made with Inkscape[tm] ;)

scalable vector graphics are all about having one size and
scaling it to be used at other sizes. there might be a need
to have a handcrafted pixel icon for very small sizes but it
rather defeats the point of scalable graphics to have
seperate files for each and every size you want.

you should probably bring this to the developers mailing
list, as people always have lots of feedback on artwork

moving to patch tracker, so that if you can get approval it
can then be committed

Could you clarify how the old icon failed to follow the
tango style guidelines? The existing application icon seems
fine to me. (There have been previous proposals to change
the toolbar icons to follow the Tango guildelines and I'm
confident that will happen eventually but some of the
proposed replacements so far have not been clear enough).

Grid snapping is required for the icon to be readable at the small
resolutions[1]. Theoretically things may work if we had non-scalink strokes
and line 'hinting' as we do with fonts, but we don't.

The icons are quite an improvement over the current one. Thanks to the
inner stroke, the icon remains readable on dark background too -

Any reason we shouldn't include this for 0.45?

Well, I have a permission from Andreas to remove the brush so if it will
be the only reason why not to include it then I can do the change in a
blink of an eye.

I am attaching icons we(Andreas and I) did as version for Windows and Mac
OS X to let packagers use proper icons for their own operating system.
File Added: inkscape.ico

Though I like the idea of a unified, tangoified icon I have some
(hopefully constructive) criticisms:
- the mac OS X icon is not of the same quality that the others. IMHO the
drops in the logo look "sloppy" if I may say so
- in general, I prefer the shape of the official inkscape logo over the
more vertically stretched one used here.
for the rest (added gradients, outlines...) I think these icons are good.

I like the replacement Windows icon very much. I do hope it becomes
"official"

I see that the icons are comitted, they are in the trunk folder with names inkscape.ico, inkscape.png, inkscape.svg, etc. The icons in the share/icons and packaging folders are still the old versions. There are no updated file icons. It seems it's just a matter of moving files around in the SVN.

Tweenk, are you able to make these changes? If so, go ahead. If not, let me know what specific changes to make.

Since this is a cosmetic change, it is not critical and I'm decreasing the priority to Medium.

I'll leave the milestone as well for now, but unless there are directions for how to implement this, I think we'll have to leave it possibly for a future release.

I can't make these changes (I have no SVN commit access, nor I have much idea how to use SVN, yet).

The specific instructions are:
1. Make 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 PNG renders of trunk/inkscape.svg, name them inkscape.16.png, inkscape.32.png, inkscape.48.png
2. Bzip2 those renders and replace trunk/packaging/inkscape.16.png.bz2, trunk/packaging/inkscape.32.png.bz2 and trunk/packaging/inkscape.48.png.bz2 with them.
3. Create a new version of packaging/win32/header.bmp with the new icon. This file is the Inkscape icon on a white-to-blue gradient. I have no idea where this is used.
4. While we're at it, fiz bug #190688 - that is, change Icon=inkscape.png in trunk/inkscape.desktop.in to Icon=inkscape (this is required to be Icon Theme Spec-compliant).
5. Additionally, replace trunk/inkscape16.ico with the 16x16 render obtained in step 1, converted with GIMP.

After the above is done, this can be marked as fixed.
