Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I get a "Could not install cupsys_1.3.2-1ubuntu7_i386.deb" error while upgrading from kubuntu 7.04 to kubuntu 7.10.
I get this both when doing th upgrade online and via alternate cd.

In the message box there's written: "subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1".

Ed.: The error is "chown: cannot access `/var/run/cups': No such file or directory" from debian/cupsys.preinst.

I don't know if these can actually help, because after the upgrade tool crashed, right after the cupsys error, I changed back my apt sources to feisty and downgraded all that was already installed in order to have a functional system.

I can't afford doing a fresh install so this upgrade is pretty critical to me.

Thank you.

Oh, also, I thought of this. If the logs are of no use because of what I said in the above comment I could retry to reinstall the upgrade (and get the same error) and backup those files at that time.
That's no problem for me as I have become a master at restoring my system after the many times I tried to upgrade :-).

A solution :

I launch these commands :

sudo mkdir /var/run/cups
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

All work fine, the upgrade from ubuntu 7.04 to ubuntu 7.10 seems to be finished ( sorry for my poor english, I'm french )

Thanks STB Land! Your tip surprisingly worked for me too! I have successfully upgraded.

Thank you Michael too. This issue seems easily solvable with a patch. Even though trivial, it's pretty annoying because it prevents you from upgrading :-/.

I don't know why /var/run/cups does not exist, but it happens for a lot of people.

I'll attach a fix, which adds a "|| true" to the chown line.

(STB Land, just a hint for the future: you can use "LANG=C" to force english messages (instead of in the setup locale), so e.g. "LANG=C sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" would make it easier to see what the problem is.)

I have had the same problem, too. I read somewhere of another fix, namely activating cupsys before starting the upgrade:

/etc/init.d/cupsys start

So I did and it worked.

Thanks for your bugreport and your patch.

This is something that update-manager can do little about, I'm fixing cupsys now (thanks to Daniel Hahler!) and it should be fixed in hardy now.
