Bug Description

Just upgraded to 14.04 and started to experience random freezes. Only workaround in to ctrl+alt+tab+F2 and ctrl+alt+tab+f7 to unfreeze laptop. Or hard reset. Currently happens when browser is open (occures for firefox, chromium). Switching from nouveau to nvidia proprietary drivers (tried both stable and updated version) didn't help.

WORKAROUND: Switched to Intel card and no lockups.

I concur. Since Ubuntu 13.04, I have seen quick lockups with both the nouveau and nVidia drivers in all the Ubuntu and derivative variants I have tried (ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, Mint, Mint KDE, etc). My original problem occurred when I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.10 to 13.04. Since then, that kernel/nvidia driver combo has been completely unusable. I can use Mint LMDE (Cinnamon) which is kernel 3.10 (I think?) and Korora/Fedora 20 (which is kernel 3.13.10) even though resume doesn't work there, so it seems that kernel 3.13 breaks something graphical. I dread the day that LMDE "upgrades" to kernel 3.13, because I expect things to break then and I'll be left wth Windows 7 as my only working alternative since I can't find a Linux distro (out of the hundreds available) that just works.

(FWIW, Solyd* both also both fail miserably with the same problem. The problem is clearly upstream of Ubuntu as it affects a number of distros with that kernel/nVidia driver combo.)

It's a pity that some things that used to work no longer do so, and the people that break them don't seem to care. I've ssen many responses on these bug report sites where the user is being blamed for the bugs, or being told "that's normal; get over it". This is just not bloody good enough.

FWIW: nVidia GeForce GT240.

It seems to me that problem is in nvidia/nouveau drivers. Switched to Intel card and no lockups so far.

"The problem is clearly upstream of Ubuntu as it affects a number of distros with that kernel/nVidia driver combo" - yep, seems so.

Dear Christopher,

Thank you for pointing out outdated BIOS. I upgraded my BIOS to the latest version.

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date output is:
L70 Ver. 01.07
01/10/2014

However, I can not tell more about lock ups because of problems with nvidia-settings - no options are showed when I open Nvidia X Serves Settings ( please see attached screenshot or link here - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4795668/Screen.jpg)

It seems like nvidia driver is installed (331, tested) but problem with nvidia settings does not allow me to switch between nvidia/intel and test whether BIOS update helped or not. I didn't have lock ups while working on intel card.

Also tried to install prime-indicator package to switch between cards, but it doesn't seem to work with latest updates in ubuntu 14.04 (tried to uninstall/reinstall - didn't help) - application doesn't load. I have the latest Ubuntu 14.04 updates installed (checked just before comment submission).

Is there any other information I can provide to help with this issue?

Kind regards,
Iaroslav

Short update:

1. Removed (with -purge option) nvidia drivers (both nvidia-331 and nvidia-331-updated and nvidia-settings.
2. Rebooted.
3. Reinstalled nvidia-331 and nvidia-settings.
4. Rebooted (oh well).
5. Drivers work, settings work (all options are available).

I'm currently working under nvidia (selected in PRIME settings) to test lock ups. Will update info tomorrow.

Well, I got this lock up again right now (:

ctrl-alt-F2 -> ctrl-alt-F7 helped again. Well, the problem is still there and occurs again when I use nvidia drivers.

Hovewer, I never installed nvidia drivers (neither proprietary nor nouveau) when I used previous release.

laroslav Z., could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

- I did a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 64bit Desktop and experience the same behaviour. Random freezes of the screen, but all the applications keep running in the background.
- Reproduced it with Unity and Gnome (2 and 3) with the nvidia-latest driver (304.121). Other drivers are not working properly with my GeForce 6100.
-Work-around is going to the shell and back again (ctrl+alt+tab+F1 and ctrl+alt+tab+f7)

Did not have this problem with previous versions of Ubuntu (=<13.04)

This seems to happen more when browser windows with lots of images are open.

Is it related to these messages from dmesg?

Ctrl-alt-F1 , ctrl-alt-f7 workaround unlocks things.

Tried changing /etc/default/grub to have

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1"

but it did not change the lockup.

In kern.log get

If I run "nvidia-settings" and change "PRIME profiles" from

NVIDIA (Performance Mode)
to
Intel (Power Saving Mode)

then it stops the lock up

May be related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=763272 as I noticed that

With PRIME profile as NVIDIA you get (the below number is from memory - but the ON I know was set )
$ cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
0000:01:00.0 ON

and it can't be changed as per bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=763272

Also with PRIME profile as Intel you get
$ cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch
0000:01:00.0 OFF
