05dc:a201 [Dell Inspiron 660] Lexar JumpDrive S70 32GB intermittently takes 12 seconds to open

Bug Description

With disk utility, I create an encrypted USB2 flash drive.

When I plug the drive into a USB2 socket, it can take up to 10 seconds for the password window to display.

Ten seconds may not sound like much, but this process is usually near instantaneous.

A 16GB Kingston Data Traveler, also encrypted, works fine.

This is my first Lexar and first 32GB size for a flash drive.

As per comment #3, this problem is resolved in Ubuntu 12.10 which is kernel v3.5 (if memory serves).

So there should be no need to kernel test v3.8.

With BIOS A05 07/26/2012, it takes 15.2 secs to get the password screen of the encrypted USB drive.

With BIOS A09 02/01/2013, it takes 2.3 secs to get the password screen of the encrypted USB drive.

That is a significant improvement.

Note that repeat attempts on A05 do not take 15.2 secs, more like 2.3 secs.

I leave to you the decision as to whether that is fast enough.

peterzay, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

After review of the mainline kernel test procedure, I assess the risk to my production machine as being too high.

My near identical test machine (no nVidia card) does not exhibit the problem. It takes about 2 secs to display the password screen for the encrypted USB key.

Note that my production machine (with nVidia card) does not use any proprietary drivers.

Could you possibly supply a liveDVD iso image for my download that contains kernel 3.11.0-031100rc4? I would live boot my production machine and test without risk.

peterzay, well, the last thing we would need is a test of the latest mainline kernel. I'm not terribly sure what assessment you made to determine the risk, but if one does a full backup (ex. just critical data, bit-for-bit drive copy via cloning software, etc.) no risk exists. As it stands, we are limited to the Ubuntu Community only, and the at most handful of upstream developers, which does not maximize the probability of this issue being addressed.

Hence, would it be possible to test the latest mainline kernel so we can get upstream developers to check this out?

The instructions for liveCD customization appear to vary somewhat from Ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, 10.04 with no clear instructions for the 13.04 or 13.10 releases.

Given the complexity of the liveCD customization documentation, I do not trust these instructions for 13.04 or 13.10.

Can our Lexar USB drive access time test be performed in a VirtualBox virtual machine? In that kind of environment, I am confident that all the risks are contained. The challenge is understanding hardware response testing times in a virtual environment.

Could you get your kernel team and VirtualBox team to assess the feasibility of the test I am proposing? It is not obviously valid to test hardware response time in a virtual environment.

Failing that, could you get one of your liveCD customization experts to build that liveDVD with kernel 3.11.0-031100rc4 for the kernel team?

Given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We are approaching release and would like to confirm if this bug is still present. Please test again with the latest development kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Joseph,

I cannot upgrade my production platform to a development release.

However, I can download the latest beta liveCD of 13.10 and boot into that
and conduct the test.

Would that be ok?

I am replying directly to your email because Launchpad is down.

Thanks.
