Install Language Packs like in moodle

Hello,

wat about the opportunity to install and upgrade language packs like in moodle - using the GUI?

Is it possible to integrate this feature into the admin-/plugin-site?

Hello Michael,

This is a good idea as it would make the updating of the strings easier for site admins. But there is a big difference to a regular language pack as far as I know because the strings are only stored in a database and not in a lang pack itself. Thus, if you want to replicate the same strings on a different Mahara instance, it would be quite difficult.

If site admins can live with that (you can always still create your own lang pack), it would be nice to have.

I do not completely understand your argument. In Mahara you will find under /var/www/mahara/lang/en.utf8 the english lang pack with all strings. And under ~/maharadata/langpacks are the other lang packs, for example de.utf8, also with all the translated strings.

For me as an admin of moodle & mahara it makes it a little bit difficult to handle the update of the german lang pack from launchpad and my own changes. To download the lang pack, to extract it, copy it to the right place and to make a diff of it and my own translations is a little bit a time wasting. ;-)

Thats why I am asking for a solution like in moodle with the 'official' lang pack - updated continuously by the community of mahara - and a local translation like 'de.utf8_local', which overwrites the original pack.

Why not to put the German files into the langpacks folder and your own German translation in the local folder. That way you will take advantage of the official translation you can easily upgrade and your own files that remain untouched.

Sorry if I explained things a bit weird. :-( I was just trying to be conscious that though the way Moodle does it looks nice, it may not be the most ideal solution.
