Bug Description

1)My system:
LinuxMint Maya 13 (MATE edition) also confirmed on LinuxMint 14 (Nadia) MATE as well.

Linux xxx 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

2) How to reproduce:
- Invoke MATE proxy settings from menu (or run mate-network-properties from shell)
- Set the proxy

3) What happened:
Proxy does not work. When on the network which is behind proxy, can not connect to the Internet (or any outer network behind proxy). Even the shell environment variables in the environment from where the mate-network-properties was ran are not set.

4) What expected:
Internet should be accessible when behind proxy. System environment variables and related mconf/gconf records should be correctly set to proxy.

5) Problem happens everytime/always.

The workaraound, that made upgrading packages working for me, was to enter proxy info in synaptic->preferences->network.
In firefox, adding proxy info to settings->extended->network did it. But its annoying to manually apply this to all internet required applications seperately.

Hi Joachim,
right, I do the same everyday twice when I connect at the office and
then back at home. I need to switch pidgin, firefox, thunderbird,
occasionally synaptic, and all the day I have to resolve where am I when
I work from the shell and deciding to set the environment
http_proxy&ftp_proxy :-).
It is pretty annoying and I hope I will find a time to solve it. I bet
it will be something with g/mconf and d-bus calls.
Good luck!
Vaclav

Ok guys, I have found a work around...

Install gnome-control-center from synaptic and then launch gnome-control-center from a terminal (or create a shortcut to /usr/bin/gnome-control-center). Browse to Network->Network Proxy now set the proxy as required and click on the apply system wide button. This should resolve your problem.

Whoops it seems that installing gnome-control-center tries to start a gnome session when you restart your machine the next time and since gnome is in a limbo you wont be able to log in. But fear not simply change your session to MATE using the second button on the login window and you are back in action. Also it is a good idea to choose MATE as the default session when prompted after you click ok on the login form.

Affects me too. It is a pain with laptop when going home and back to office.
Then, even if seeting proxy in synaptic->preferences->network solves the problem of the Update Manager also, it does not solve the problem for Software Manager.
The problem might be similar with the one reported yearlier for ubuntu gnome-control-center: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/967978
and already fixed.

The bug listed on ubuntu says it is resolved with Gnome Control Center 1:3.4.0-0ubuntu5

I just tried to apply this fix to Mint 13 Maya with mate and I have the problem still. The version installed however from Package manager was 1:3.4.1-1linuxmint1.

Since a proxy is necessary for many internet connections and the necessity of connecting to the intenet , this makes Maya Mate look real bad. I thought bugs like this from Ubuntu were to be fixed in Mint before release. If not , I might as well run Ubuntu as they have the fix and Mint does not

I encountered aother intresting networking problem that may be possibly related ad thought it worth mentioning....

I am on a network with 2 gateways . by default the IP ending in .1 is issued by DHCP , however with a manual conbfiguratiopn we can switch to the .2 gateway.

Doing this in Mint 13 Mate has no effect and leaves me in gateway .1

Hi,
I cannot upgrade the system. I can only use Firefox because it is posible to set the proxy in the prefernces. I have tried everything:
I have set the env variables but nothing. The system doesn't connect, i.e. I cannot install gnome-control-center.

Please can you help me? I need of some comand line to set up the proxy.

DOwnload this file to a USB memory

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/gnome/gnome-control-center
see bottom of page --depending on 32 or 64 bit

You may also need the gnome-control-center-data which is linked to on
the same page

If you have dependency issues look for links on that page Mint 13 is
ubuntu 12.04

be careful for 64 or 32 bit

Create/edit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/03proxy
and add following:
Acquire::http::Proxy "http:://your.proxy.server:1234"

Where 1234 is the port the proxy listen for connections.

Anyway you may edit the synaptic network settings in case you use it or
move towards the KDE4 which was finally my choice. I don't know why
those distro guys lets this in my opinion important feature without any
attention.

This is fcking common requirement to modify proxy and the lack of this
feature keeps a lot of first time users away from linux. Thank you
GNOME3, thank you MATE, thank you all those cool, new, trendy developers
for all those fishes!

Have fun!

About previous comment, forget the USB memory use proxy in firefox to download! Once you install the deb and set the proxy you should be good to go system wide.

Sadly, the gnome-control-center solution does not work for me. The problem itself still exists in linux mint 14 nadja w/ MATE desktop, though. Cinnamon works, but I like MATE better, and now I am a bit disappointed... why doesn't anyone care about this?

Hi,
I have partially solved my problem as follows.

My PC is behind a firewall so I need to provide some data to the system (proxy an so on).
First I have set the proxy under Preferences->Network proxy. Now I can browse the Internet with Firefox (under 'connection settings: use system proxy settings'). But it is not enough to upgrade the system. This because the process is managed by Superuser (have to insert the passwd). So one have to open a terminal and type
sudo -s
(pswd)
export http_proxy=proxy:port
export https_proxy=proxy:port
export ftp_proxy=proxy:port

Now I get the updates with Update manager but the Software manager (i.e. mintInstall 7.4.4) doesn't work. I don't know why.

Other solutions (i.e. gnome-control-center) don't work for me.

Hi,
how to fix Software manager problems:

Create, if not exists, the file

/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/proxy

Edit the file and add the following line:

Acquire::http::proxy "http://proxy:port/";

Save and exit. Remember to write the ';' at the end of the line!!!

Any developer love for this bug would be greatly appreciated!

This seems to be the only bug keeping me from using Mint for Work and Home.

Hello! Trying to use Squid3 + Dansguardian, in Mint 14 MATE.

When setting Firefox individually (via its Preferences section) the proxy does work; but when setting it via the system Network proxy no effects can be appreciated.

Notes:
· gnome-control-center configuration doesn't work either.
· Chromium does not detect the proxy too.

Regards.
