Whoops it seems that installing gnome-control-center tries to start a gnome session when you restart your machine the next time and since gnome is in a limbo you wont be able to log in. But fear not simply change your session to MATE using the second button on the login window and you are back in action. Also it is a good idea to choose MATE as the default session when prompted after you click ok on the login form.
