I use the Mate desktop and the Workspace Switcher applet shows an icon
within the Switcher icon for each open application. Some applications
show their unique icons (e.g. Cherrytree, Firefox, Libre Office), others
just a blank 'window' icon. When I look at the Switcher icon I see the 4
workspaces and icons for all open applications, except Xpad. I can also
see which workspace is not being used by the absence of icons.

I can get the Xpad icon within Switcher by turning View/Window
Decorations off and on, but it doesn't hold thru a reboot.

The Cinnamon desktop switcher does not have this feature, it only shows
the workspace numbers within the switcher icon. The Mate switcher can be
configured to show workspace names which suppresses the application icons.

Hope this helps.
